Rehearsal: Yay or Nay? Like? Dislike?

I always like rehearsals because it is playing music and I simply enjoying playing.
Some nights are a bit off and not as much fun but one of us usually has a funny story or laugh that we share which is always great.
Some nights just like with playing live, you get a great vibe and play fantastic....other nights, it's just flat as a pancake and you can't wait to get out of there.

All in all, very thankful to have a great outlet.

Yep. As someone said earlier, some golf, some do billiards or fishing etc etc. I do music and I love to play music with other people whether it's covers or Tribute or originals but the latter is the hardest if you ask me. At least it was for me so I just record my own original stuff and don't have to try to explain to the drummer or bass player what I want I just do it myself.
I get so much joy out of playing music with other people. I do prefer to play live in front of people but I don't have to in order to have a good time.

No drugs, no booze because I get high off the music. I am not judging, I just find for me it interferes with the fun, doesnt enhance it for me. Thats not to say I am afraid to pop a couple frosty ones at a jam or gig because I will occasionally.

i am fine with rehearsals, but i wish people would do the prep involved so that rehearsal doesn't mean learning the songs and parts for the first fucking time.

know the arrangement and the parts. know the chords and the main song parts and hooks. know the keys and the changes. know the solo or know how to play something similar so that it doesn't sound like you are trying to communicate in spanish when the figurative language is english.

Oh definitely. Luckily all 3 projects I am in people come to rehearsals to tighten up everything. Occasionally someone (including myself) was too busy to work up something and we just skip it for next time but overall it's just working out endings etc etc..

After our drummer getting his knee scoped in November, and a round of Flu and other
sickness making its way through band members and their families, we are "supposed to"
get together tonight for the first time in over a month.

Thank goodness, my mental health was caving.

Feel the same way. :banana

I get excited just like I am a teenager all over again, back when we didn't know WTF
we were doing but still did it anyways!

Never gets old. :beer

That reminds me of something I heard the other day about staying young. Do the things that make you
feel young again, and you will be.

I know it sounds a little corny but when I am playing rock n roll or metal with a band and we are tight, I literally get this rush or high and it's like pure elation bordering on a state of ecstasy for me. I love chasing that dragon.

Going to go play with a new-to-me rhythm section for the first time tomorrow night.

I haven't been the primary singer/sole guitarist in a band in a loooooooooooong time.
I have really enjoyed being a supporting member and learned a lot playing nice with
others in a variety of band settings. I am looking forward to being able to let it rip and
get my proverbial rocks off!!! :banana

There will be solos, lots of solos!!

Really cool timing, and hoping the New Year has more good things in store.

Speaking of rehearsals I have been asked to join another band. That would make 4. Hopefully they won't get busier than they are because in our convos we have been in lock step with everything. I got room for maybe 1 more gig a month. This one has a keyboardist and it's been so long since I have been able to enjoy being in a band with a keys player. I'd be the guitar/front for them if it works out.

Going to the audition tonight. :banana

Damn, I don’t even have the patience for one band right now!

The occasional times I get the “Damn, I really want to play in a band right now” are outweighed by me sitting in my studio, banging out a whole song in an hour and then spending a week making it sound exactly how I want it to. Or the nights I don’t want to do a damn thing but vegetate on my couch. My last few band experiences just soured me and the only way I’d do it now is with certain people who I know have great attitudes.

I think I mostly need to put out an album on my own just to get it out of my system so I can subject myself to 3 hours in a rehearsal space of guys trying to figure out their parts while I stare at my watch.

I love recording at home too but I can't write fast. It might take me a month to complete a song. I have severe ADHD. It's a bonus though learning covers because I have gotten really good at woodshedding fast so as to not get bored or lose attention. I've had times where I could work up a dozen songs in a few hours. As long as I play them within a day or so I won't forget the parts. I'd say I know over a thousand cover songs at this point. Just this morning I worked up Train Train by Blackfoot and the proper way to play Just Got Paid by ZZ Top. I love playing slide cos I am kind of weak at it so it forces me to get better learning all those slide parts.

Man, we’re polar opposites!

I can write extremely fast if when I‘m hearing the whole song in my head, it’s a race to get it all recorded before it escapes my brain, but with covers….hahahah I started learning “Black Dog” the other day, got to the first chorus and was bored, went back to noodling. Sometimes I’ll even get REALLY excited about learning a cover, only to get 1/4 of the way into it and just quit.

I'm in the middle.

Not really. My heart is in originals and being creative---even if I am just being redundant!

I only ever learned covers to pay some bills and get me by. It's fun, but everyone in every band I
have ever played in eventually gets bored with cover material when you play it too much. Just
the nature of the beast.

That means either learning new material constantly, or taking liberties with covers and changing
the key, tempo, or feel. Or just pounding that shit out like a porn star in the 14th hour of their workday.

I have even been known to be the asshole who goes to take a leak during "certain" songs. I do have a
tiny bladder. For real!!! :rofl

Nothing is worse than playing Mustang Sally to the bar staff. OTOH to me nothing is better than a packed dance floor/house no matter what I am playing. I have been on both ends of the spectrum many times but typically in between that. The latter helps ease the pain of the former in the long run. I am paraphrasing but Glenn Tipton once quipped that he hates playing Living After Midnight until he looks out and see's the throngs of fans singing along to it. For me I'll take 40 people working up a sweat over what's coming off the stage I'm on.

If I am just playing to 4 walls, I am not looking to go over a set list that everyone in the band can play in their sleep. if there's nothing to work on (never) then I'd rather spend that time doing other things but it's not just material I like to work on. I like to work out cues, and some choreography and finding how the list flows.

The guy who runs my band mentioned rehearsal the other day and I actually felt a little panicky. Please no why?

That's a great attitude, Bob. I have to confess to NOT always having it. I used to get my snobby nose shoved way too
far up my own ass and was above certain songs. I would NEVER play that. Well, guess what? :brick

When I lost some ego and selfishness my live playing experience and my life both became better. It's not about
me all the time. Other people are having their own experiences, and those are as valid as my own. Rather than
being aloof and pissy about a song choice I grew to sacrifice myself to the moment and be a servant to the
music. I know it sounds New-Agey and sketchy as fuck, but it made me enjoy playing live more (regardless of
context or setlist or how many people showed up), as well as those I was playing with. Besides, being an ego-driven
C*ck is a miserable way to live. For me. Others may enjoy it more.

The world is NEVER going to align with our every wish. People are going to yell out "Freebird!" and "Brown-Eyed Girl"
until the end of time. Takes 5 minutes to get through it (unless it is Freebird!), and you made more than one person's
night. Not a damn thing wrong with making other people happy. I have found it comes back around, too. :beer

Don't get me wrong if I have a choice between a day trip that includes time with family or going over songs for a gig happening in a week I am going to choose family 100% of the time. I do love to play with a tight band though. It's easily top 3 of my favorites things to do in life.

The weekly hang with some jam buddies is pivoting. I said I would never do this, but here I am
taking a Mandolin, and a few Harmonicas and no Electric Guitar. :wat

Smells Like MTV Unplugged.

What's next, the end of the world?? :idk
