Well, now it’s awkward

I once had the opposite experience. I was in an ambient phase and was used to playing large stages where real estate was of no concern so I had amassed a ridiculously big pedalboard. It had to be carried in a keyboard case…

We relocated. I took a break from playing while we were settling in. A few months go by and I’m ready to start gigging again. I show up to an audition with said pedalboard. I get the gig. The gigs/stages they play are smaller than I’m used to, so between the audition and the first gig I pick up a helix to downsize my footprint and still be able to do mostly the same stuff. I show up to the first rehearsal and apparently my insane pedalboard has been a huge topic of conversation that everyone is pumped about and the disappointment on their faces when I walk in with a helix backpack was palpable.

D

Interesting. Are the additional pedals useful because the FM has so few footswitches or are you unhappy with the counterparts in the FM?

D

It started out as needing a couple extra things I didn’t have enough footswitches for. But I found I like the sound and functionality of the physical pedals far better than using the ones in the device itself.

Haha!

For me digital/analog hybrid rigs are the Truth, The Way, and the Life. :chef

Everyone else is fighting for supremacy of one over the other. That's
just ridiculous at this point. I don't have enough spare oxygen to
mess with that business.

I run analog with my FM3 in a number of different ways, including with
pedals when I get together with the guys to practice once a week.

It's become my most used piece of gear, but I never really run it on it's
own as an all-in-one device. Essential, but not completely sufficient for
all my needs. Because, why?? :idk

Albeit expensive, you're talking about a Helix, lol.

As far as the amp in a box thing, I wonder if that is because it's kind of already been done, and maybe it's not as big of a market, or yields as much of a profit margin to make it worth it?

You have the Tech 21 character pedals, which, not only get you one amp, but a couple of amps in one pedal, AND the "in-between" amp sounds as well. With digital modelers, it's always going to be, "which amp(s) do we choose for this, and not many guitar players will agree on which ones, and round and round we go . . .

Kind of a losing proposition.

Mini Helix would do it...not many people will want to build a pedalboard with a full size Helix on board. HX Stomp and HX Effects only have four scenes/snapshots. Quad Cortex is pretty close but MIDI isn't great to control other devices. It's why I haven't bailed on it yet.

All very true

I’ll tell you why.

Because your whole horn section gushes over how awesome you are for using your fm3 as an all-in-one device when these other guitarists need pedalboards and amps to do what you’re smart enough to do all in one little pedal, so now you’re embarrassed to bring your own pedalboard to the next show because you know they’ll all be disappointed in you!

That’s why :rofl
