Roughly 20 years ago I came down with a kidney stone. I was driving to work and then the pain started. Boy, was it painful. I made it to the emergency room. The doctor prescribed narcotics for the pain and sent me home to wait out passing the kidney stone. So I went home, took the meds and promptly fell asleep on the couch. I left the back sliding glass door cracked open for our cat. I Woke up after a while and realized that something didn't look right. It took me a few seconds to realize that a custom built guitar that had been hanging on a guitar stand right by the couch was missing. I called for my wife, and after a thorough search we realized that her purse had also been stolen, along with her car keys, and her car. We called the police and filed a report. The car was recovered several days later, reeking of beer, weed, and cigarettes (at least no urine or feces). But no guitar. I was of course grateful that the thief wasn't violent. But pretty damned pissed that someone had the temerity to walk within a couple of feet of me sleeping. Pretty brazen asshole, that one. I suppose that he might have gotten violent if I woke up. So, I'll count it as a mercy that I slept through the whole thing.
Every now and then I post a Craigslist ad with pics of the lost guitar and include in the ad that I'm offering a reward for the guitar's return. Earlier today, for the first time in years of searching, I got a reply today from someone who said that they tried to buy my stolen guitar from a neighbor. I sent a reply, but after 2 hours, he hasn't replied back (I assume that it is a he, but I actually have no idea). I said in the email that I'd meet him at a Seattle Guitar Center during daylight hours and give him the reward if he gave me the guitar and the guitar was in good playable condition. The guitar was in excellent/near mint condition when it was stolen. I'm sure that it had playwear because it saw some gigs, but it was in great shape when it was stolen. Anyway, I am offering a $500 reward for return of the guitar, so the person who replied may just be a scammer. Probably is, especially if I never hear back from the dude. But if I do hear back, I'll pay the reward if the guy meets my terms (the guitar must be in my hand and in good, playable condition).
The guitar was heavy - I'm guessing over 10 lbs. I never weighed it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was close to 11 lbs. It was heavy. And it had a high end focus that I didn't like so much. I tried to remedy with replacing pickups and eventually settled on Harmonic Design Z90 pickups. I managed to get it sounding decent, but the weight never stopped being an obstacle to playing the guitar, especially at gigs where I was standing up for a couple of hours. The builder worked at Gilmer Wood in Portland, Oregon, which is where I lived in the 1990s. I'm hoping to get it back, but I've already let it go, so I don't want to jump through a lot of hoops. If it's easy to get back, then great. If not, then I already have nicer guitars to replace it. But I'd pay the reward to get the guitar back because it has sentimental value. Here's hoping that this one comes home (though home today is now a good 70 - 80 miles from where it was stolen from).
I will be taking precautions to keep from getting robbed of the reward money ( reason I'm asking to meet the guy during the day at a GC).
