Project BIAS-X

Really? I've never used their stuff, but I stumbled upon this chick's videos back before I landed on an Axe Fx, and seriously considered buying whatever Bias product she's using, because all her tones sounded great.

Here's 2:

I have Bias FX2, Bias Amp 2, and a Spark on loan. I just think it sucks compared to other stuff.

I’ve got Helix Native, Amplitube 5, S-Gear, Genome, ToneX, NAM stuff, etc. I find it hard to believe I can get great tones out of all that stuff, but somehow Positive Grid eludes me. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Who knows.

Well I figured she knew a LOT more about gear than I did, since she was removing tracks from original recordings and making her own stems of several of the covers she played, plus I couldn't find much support online for dialing in tones, like there was for the Fractal stuff (Leon & Cooper, for example; in fact Cooper's vids pushed me over the top on Fractal), which I knew I'd need. So I'm glad I didn't choose Bias.

Back then (2018-ish) I knew nothing about all this modeling tech! The only other thing I knew was that I didn't want anything from Line 6, since I'd heard that Spider amp they made back in the day, whom a buddy of mine thought sounded awesome, but really sounded like dog shit. So, right or wrong, I ruled them out. Funny how older experiences with brands can shape your opinions of them..., forever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And crazy as it may seem, the Bias stuff seemed priced too low for it to be high enough quality, in my opinion, again, right or wrong. That was 6 years ago; today I know that's not a factor.

This is the kind of shit you get when you have a product team that lacks vision and thinks stapling an LLM to their sinking ship is going to turn the company around.

AI isn’t a feature.

But is PG ship sinking? I haven’t seen a strong competitor to the Spark Amps yet.
The main competition is probably the Yamaha THR and Boss Katana Air. Both are afaik more expensive though so I expect the Spark series is selling well.

That image cracks me up. So true.

I can’t say the ship is sinking. I can say the company has been a giant disappointment in terms of the progression of their modeling technology given where they started with the iOS app a decade ago. Just my opinion. I can’t stand any of their stuff.

Just had a 180' change of mind on this.

AI / ML / LLM's etc ...... only work ok for things like Writing / Literature / Maths / Chemistry / Engineering / Biology / Detailed Scientific areas / Medical sciences / Electronics etc..... because there are "trillions of gigabytes" of data [I exaggerate] that can be minded and "learned" from - and even now, "AI" has hit a massive brick wall as in essence, there is fuck-all data left to be mined and therefore "learned" from.

As far as creating guitar Amp tones with amps and efx .... what actual data are they mining for their AI / ML / LLM to "learn" from ?

I cant think of any repositories or stockpiles of this sort of data anywhere ?

I'm actually very skeptical that they are "mining" or "trawling" for anything, and a just using some generic built-in "rules" PG have written and embedded in their code ?

Anyone tried it?
I doubt I'll ever need it (especially on the computer), but at $99 I sprung for it. Now both BIAS_X and BIAS FX2 come up with frozen intro screens. On both of my current Win11 Dell Everything current laptop computers. PITA

Got an immediate response from TS though, had to download a utility program to create a logfile for them. PITA PITA
The Bleeding Edge of Technology....

But if they upgrade the modeling on my Spark 2 so I can transfer models from the computer there I'll be a happy camper.

I've been having a lot of fun with it. I view it as a natural progression from what Kemper did a dozen years ago.

Instead of dealing with a blank canvas when crafting a tone and dialing in a bunch of parameters, Kemper asked you to give it an amp that has the sound you want and it will choose an amp model and adjust the parameters for you to achieve that sound. It didn't give you any tones you couldn't already get with an AxeFX, but it was a different workflow to get to the sound you want.

With Bias-X, it's the next natural, and even obvious, step. Instead of giving it an amp to be profiled, you give it audio examples, either from a verbal description of what you want or an audio file. It doesn't give you any tones you couldn't get with another modeler, but it's a different workflow to reach your tonal goal. What you end up with is still a model with some parameters you can tweak, especially for the cab, similar to other modelers.

I don't see it as an AI servant that will deliver a finished tone to you on a platter. Instead it takes some of the drudgery out of searching through the endless possibilities of amp models and IR's to get you in the ball park.

One problem worth mentioning with BiasX is that, at launch, it has no midi control. At all. So while there is a wah effect, there is no way to control it with a pedal and there is no way to select presets with a pedal. It doesn't even have any automatable parameters.
