Pinch Harmonics/Squeals/Artificial Harmonics...

Before Zakk came on the scene and John Sykes did the Whitesnake album Vivian Campbell
was killing it with Dio. He was the first guy I heard put a pinch harmonic in an actual riff and
not as part of a solo. I am sure there were others before him. He's just the first guy I heard do
it on the A or E strings in the main riff to Rainbow In The Dark.

Definitely Viv was the guy I remember hearing first in a riff (and plenty in solos, too).

He has often credited Irish blues-rocker Rory Gallagher as his influence for harmonics among other things.

Later, Zakk took things a step further.

I’m super frustrated that for my whole guitar playing life, artificial harmonics were a large part of my vocabulary and something I could get as easily as any picked note.

Some how, in the last few years, I have lost a large degree of predictability with them. Same guitars same amps. Only think I can think of in this time was transitioning from bmx bikes to dirt jumper’s which use a much different type of brake lever.

I’m totally flummoxed
