I've done this kind of thing before. But thought I'd give it another shot. Clean channel is the Mark V, cab is my Egnater 4x12, mics are two SM57's on two separate speakers. Clips are in mono to represent what you'd get through a common live rig.

I'm not at all impressed with the Helix, to be honest. I think for this kind of tone, there is sooooooooooo much room for improvement.

Man that Fractal Cirrocumulus is outstanding. I can think of a few of my own unfinished songs I could use that (with guitar) on in place of the keyboard ideas I have.

But alas I have no Fractals...

Meris is nice also, surprised at how nice the MXR sounds. Which MXR is that?

And agreed the Helix is very dull here compared to those.

Thanks for doing this Drew. You always have such cool ideas.

Thanks man!!

It is the MXR M300 Reverb set to Mod mode - it is pretty damn lush actually!!

BTW, it should be really obvious by now, but I'm not particularly a "realistic" reverb kind of guy. I don't care much for classic spring, or mellow room and plate sounds, or "tasteful" hall sounds. I want cinematic ear juice.

Fractal and Meris deliver that in spades, it is really hard to pick a preference!!

Makes the case for a VP4 a bit stronger I think.

I prefer the fractal here, probably followed by the mxr. The fractal just seems more lush and interesting to me. I agree that the mix seems a lot lower on the helix so it’s hard to compare that one to the rest. The Meris didn’t do a lot for me on this one.

You can't get the Helix to have the same weight to both the wet and dry. The mix was at 45% or so. The others were actually a bit lower!!

I thought the Meris was the most balanced and musical. The Fractal was great, but a little too much, if you know what I mean. That may have just been the settings.

I just feel really smart and wise now knowing that I have the Meris and a Fractal. :love:chef

I know it wasn't your intent, Orv, but thanks for the little boost in mood and inspiration here. :beer

I know this is going to sound silly, but the dry clip sounds the best for that riff.

Try the gold plate with length and/or size turned up and tell me if you still don't care for it 😉
