NMD: Marshall JVM 410H

BTW, be very CAREFUL with JJ EL-34L’s.
OK. Are those the "stock" Marshall branded power tubes?

Received a balanced Sovtek 5751 & a balanced JAN Phillips 5751 from Doug's Tubes to roll with a JJ 5751 and the stock phase inverter.

The stock PI (too much gain) and the JJ 5751 (too crispy / spitty) didn’t make the cut.

I now have a HUGE problem.

The Sovtek & JAN Phillips both tame the over-the-top available gain while sounding uniquely incredible, but I can only choose one.

Sovtek is warm and chewy in all the right ways, but the JP evokes a glassy-but-not-shrill, multi-dimensional girth that feels euphoric under my fingers at any gain level.

:chef :chef :chef

I may try keeping the JP in the the PI position and roll the Sovtek along with the TungSol & Gold Lion gold pins through the other 4 positions.

It's after 9PM here, so that will have to wait until tomorrow for the sake of my neighbors. :grin

They only test pre amp tubes for gain and microphonics. The tone is up to you . I have a draw full of nos tubes and don’t find modern amps to be sensitive to much except gain and microphonics. V1 is king in the JVM .

I think I'm set for now.

Power tubes = stock "Marshall" branded 6L6 EL34 x 4 :facepalm :rofl

V1 = "Mesa/Boogie" branded 12AX7-A
V2 = Tung-Sol gold pin 12AX7
V3 = Gold Lion gold pin 12AX7
V4 = Tung-Sol gold pin 12AX7
V5 = JAN Phillips 5751

:satan :satan :satan :satan :chef :chef :chef

Now back to playing!

Marshall and 6L6s just seems weird. I had no idea the JVMs came with 6L6s.

I am going back to bed. The world is all askew today. :LOL:

Oops! My mind is still in Mesa land. EL34s for the win :facepalm

:rofl

I was looking at these on my bench...

I had pulled the 6L6s from the 2:90 when I was troubleshooting the Fillmore 50 issue I ran into a couple of weeks ago.

@gearJunkie Has sir ever considered a true beam tetrode the: EH 6CA7?

I must confess to being a little self-biased in favour of this power tube.
I have absolutely zero experience with the EH 6CA7.

I appreciate the suggestion and I will definitely put it at the top of my list when a retube is needed. But tomorrow is a new day. :facepalm

I am very happy with the sound and performance of the JVM410H with the current preamp tube swaps & the stock EL34 power tubes.

I’ve got a brand new one, a bunch of Mesa 12AX7/12AX7-A and a Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG+ sitting around. I’m going to check out how the stock tubes sound first though as I want to get a good feel for the stock amp. Man I wish that JVM forum still existed.

I've only heard & read good things when it comes to using an AT7 in the PI socket.

Definitely a good idea to cycle through the tubes you already have before spending more money.

I look forward to hearing about your results.

Just tried a low noise & microphonics JJ ECC832 in the V1 position. I really like the character imparted by the "low gain" second triode, but it feels like too much gain reduction for the green and orange voicings on both the clean and crunch channels.

I'm waiting for the tubes to cool, and then I'm going to try a pair of American made 5751s (RCA & JAN GE) in V1 and V2.

Rollin' rollin' rollin' :headbang
