NGD: PRS SE DGT (was: Suitable Locking Tuners for PRS SE)

Yeah having steps to get in and out makes a huge difference. I've put boards down and store a load of random stiff up there.

So, this looks like a keeper. Just what I expected the first time around.
Will not replace the tuners immediately but have a look for suitable non-PRS ones first (I just prefer thumbscrew ones).

Knowing me, I could pretty much imagine that I will somewhat alter the electronics one day (I think I just prefer a master volume and I may as well want to exchange the switch with the middle pot), but maybe it's just a matter of getting used to. After all, with it's excellent clean up, it might be nice to dial the neck pickup back some and have a quick'n'dirty almost clean to riffing switching system with just the toggle switch. We'll see.
I could as well imagine checking out another bridge pickup one day, basically just for the fun of it, but I will very likely never do that with the neck pickup as I *really* like that one (had to screw it down quite a bit, though). Slight compression and some reverb and there's a wonderful clean lead tone.

Anyhow, looks like the two of us will become friends now.

Congrats! Sounds like it was quite journey.

Yeah well, defenitely. I actually still don't know what to think about this because the differences between these supposed-to-be-at-least-almost-identical guitars is just staggering.
But then, at least for now I'm a happy camper.

I have had zero issues with mine. I don't think I even set it up. Changed strings on it once. :idk

Probably the best SE I have owned. It actually has a little personality (sorry, Paul!), and the pickups
are freaking killer for my ears and hands! :chef

See, these are the comments I've read all over the net. Pretty much without much exceptions. Which is why I had Thomann send me one instead of looking for a shop (would've bought 2nd hand as well, but nothing even remotely close to where I live), even if I promised to myself I'd never buy a guitar unseen/touched anymore after a pretty bad experience.

Guess I was one of the few folks who really got a dud in his hands. But fortunately I gave it a second chance.

I assumed I'd make some changes, but it stays in tune, feels great, and sounds great.

I even like the split coil options. For me, it's a bit like a Tele and a Les Paul had a baby,
but ends up being its own thing.

Happy to see you ended up with one you are happy with!

Yeah it's surprising it passed QA.

I won't say mine was perfect but nowhere near the issues you had. And to take it to the next level I spent a good amount of time leveling, recrowning and polishing the frets, replacing the nut with a GraphTech nut and installing locking tuners.

Schecter already does graphtech nuts and locking tuners - that's one thing I wish PRS SEs did by default.

Yeah, been reading your NGD thread already.

I think the nut on this one will do for the time being (unless something's happening again when changing strings, but it doesn't look like) and fretwork is pretty fine (the edges are better than on the previous one, too).

I might install some Graphtech saddles, though, have a set around that should fit. Might not look too great as they're black, but I could order silver ones (which only have the graphite stuff in the string slots) later on in case I'm fine with their sound. I just love them on my vibrato equipped live guitars as they always greatly increased string life for me.

Current mantra:

"No Sascha, this doesn't need to become yet another experimental guitar after just one day! Yes, you should give that switch position a few more testrides! Mr. Grissom is much more of a player than you, he certainly had good reasons for the switch to be moved to that awkward position, just trust him!"

Let's hope it works at least for a while.
I really start to love this guitar but I hate the switch position. Exchanging it with a pot wouldn't help, either, that's what I know already. I want the switch where it is on my strat-ish guitars. And I want a 3-way blade switch.
I hope I manage to check things out some more, but I'm afraid I'll have to talk to my guitar guy somewhen early next year to make him prepare his chainsaw arsenal.

And I defenitely want a master volume (which obviously isn't a big deal).

I've used a PRS with mccarty switching for 25 years now and never found it weird tbh. I definitely find it a lot easier than the old rotary switch they used to use.
