NGD: PRS SE DGT (was: Suitable Locking Tuners for PRS SE)

Fwiw, G-string nut slot is filed soooo awfully bad, hard to believe. Tried graphite and lipstick in the slot already, doesn't help much. D-string is causing a little bit of "zing", too (filed too low, very light contact with 1st fret as it seems, just as with the first delivery, fortunately not as bad).

If this was happening on a HB axe for 400 bucks, people would be complaining already - but somehow PRS is getting away with it.
Now, I've already ordered a replacement nut along with the PRS locking tuners, so things will be fine - and (un?)fortunately I like the basic qualities of the guitar so much that I'm accepting all of this - but really, I shouldn't have to deal with any of it.

So, PRS locking tuners and Graphtech nut (thanks for the heads up, @AlbertA) installed. Working *very* smoothly now and I actually really like the PRS tuners a whole lot, string changing should be faster than ever.
Sanded the nut down but have possibly been a tad over-cautious, so I'll sand a bit more down on the next string change.

Anyhow, this is now pretty much the guitar as it should be - but seriously, while I knew that I wanted to exchange the bridge saddles in favour of Graphtechs before I bought the thing, this should really come with a decent nut and locking tuners straight out of the factory, I shouldn't have to take care about it.

So can we have a picture or two now to see your changes ?

Not even gonna try to take any fancy shots, so here we are:

As said before, I'm actually fine with the black bridge saddles and I vastly prefer the chrome knobs over the originals (a lot easier to deal with, too, obviously especially valid for the push/pull pot).

Resoldered things as well, OG bridge pickup pot is now master volume, individual neck volume is still intact. IMO a way more comfortable to deal with solution with still quite some flexibility in middle position.

Looks good 👌

The PRS SE Locking tuners are great. Full stop. I put a set on my SE Santana and have been very satisfied with them. Half tempted to buy a set for my Starla. Not that it necessarily needs them but more so just because I’ve come to appreciate locking tuners more.

PRS quality control is an utter POS!!!

Lost two E1 strings because of sharp edges on the tuner's string hole. I don't even remember when I had this happen for the last time - possibly even never. Which is why I thought the first string was a dud, so I just grrr-ed and pulled out another one from a fresh set. And it broke at the exact same spot. Had a look - and sure enough, of f***ing course the edges of the string hole are as sharp as if they were meant to be on a friggin' cutter!
Already looked around and that even seems to be a common issue.

Sure, PRS, charge around 2 x as much for your tuners and deliver them with sharp edges, way to go!

No idea what to do now, I've got no Dremel, let alone a suitable tip to deburr things. Fuck it!

Man you really getting the luck of the draw with this guitar.

You can use some sandpaper, tape around to protect the headstock and just use an old piece of string and fold the little strip of sandpaper unto it to work the edge of the hole - Start with probably 600 grit smooth it with 800-1000.

Yeah, something similar was what I had in mind already.

Would actually prefer to send them back - but in that case I'd end up with the issue of most posts of most alternative tuners not being sufficiently long.

You bet.
I was always crosschecking whether any of the issues I was having was my fault - but well, no. I mean, I didn't even touch the stringholes on the tuners, others than to, well, push some string ends through them. And at least at one spot, the hole edge is razor sharp.

And fwiw, I can't count how often I replaced tuners in my life already (ever since I had my first locking tuners I wanted them on pretty much any guitar - and there's been quite some without) - and as said, I never had any such an issue.

Should have left the original tuners on.

Nah. Seriously, those locking tuners are a difference like night and day. Restringing takes, I dunno, possibly 5 minutes top, another 5 minutes later and the thing is in tune so well it's gig ready.
But obviously, this is only valid in case the strings stay intact.

Anyway, I found a really tiny round file in my arsenal, fooled around with it and fine sanded with 800 paper, should hopefully be better now. Need to do the others as well, I'm afraid - but not now.

congrats on the guitar. sucks that you've had issues with them.

i've not played any of the se guitars in a long time, but kinda thought about picking up one the all mahogany dgt's. i'll definitely check one over before buying.

Fwiw, now that I'm pretty much done (will alter the neck pickup volume pot some day), after sanding down the nut a bit more, this is just a great guitar. I hope that I'll soon be able to say "worth all the effort", but before I need through take it to its paces. Who knows which other surprises PRS has prepared somewhere under the hood...
