New Friedman IR-X preamp

If BluGuitar and my Strymon Riverside have taught me anything, it's that having a tube preamp is not that relevant in a device like this.

The poweramp sim seems pretty rudimentary and not having a built in reverb in a device like this is a miss. It's just so important for that headphone out.

tbf, I think the "typical Friedman customer" type probably thinks that they need valves more than they actually do. ALL VALVE PREAMP CIRCUIT fits more with Friedman's brand.

I think its actually quite a good product for someone who wants something small/flexible/inexpensive(ish) that looks and sounds like a Friedman. Not exactly the same as owning a full fat head but I think itll make a portion of customers quite happy.

Dave seems to insist that it's a 1:1 replacement for his amp heads if comparing preamps (around 3:07 mark in this video).

oh I’m sure circuit wise, it’s absolutely Dave favourite circuits. He doesn’t really deviate from those.

I mean as far as someone who wants to own a Friedman, the big heads probably give that feeling of owning a Friedman more than the pedal would. But for certain people, this will give a cheaper and more practical way to experience the Friedman sound.

l think a lot of the reason of owning any boutique amp is that feeling of ownership - it’s totally dumb, but so is owning deafeningly loud, big amplifiers that need regular servicing and are prone to acting up.

Also. I would be absolutely down to pick up his Naked preamp and run that into my BE100 poweramp.

Seems like the thump and presence are associated with the IR loader but not embedded within the IR’s themselves. That’s my guess anyway - disengaging presence and thump=no power amp, having them on with no IR is with poweramp etc

Tube preamps are still relevant, and at minimal 'just as' relevant as any other circuit. I don't use any Friedman products but I do own at least 7 tube pedals/preamps from BK to Vox Valvenergy line. I also have a Helix and occasionally use amp plugins. Using a tube front-end to me sounds and feels more harmonically rich -- whether that's running into a Helix, SS amp, or DI with IRs. Modeling is awesome, but I still prefer a tube front end.

Definitely anxious to check this out later with some good speakers. I’m definitely curious about this.

I’ve been debating lately if I want to get an actual amp or just some preamp pedals and continue using my existing 2x12’s with the 170/BAM. Too many fucking options these days.

I got two minutes into the Andertons video and decided to try one out. Local GC says it’s in stock. Ordered and hopefully available for pickup later today.

Will try it with an HX stomp for effects, both direct and without a cab into the power amp input of my Katana Artist. In theory would be a super quiet Friedman amp right?

Looks like a well thought and good sounding product.
Well done mr friedman!

The only thing I don't "like" is that you can't output both emulated and non emulated signal if you're using the fx loop unless you use an external splitter.

Man points at things, Vol. 415.

You can disable IR's using the editor. If you want to bypass the power amp sim as well just use the fx send.

Is the power amp sim just static EQ curves or is there so dynamic poweramp->cab interaction modelling going on? does it do that “phase inverter distorting” thing when you increase the master?

AND how does it sound using other preamps into the fx return?

Didn't you do this already with that TwoNotes thing? :hmm Though the Friedman aspect of it would probably be right up your alley...
I did, but honestly, I don't think I gave the Revolt enough time before I returned it, (I never even tried it with an IR, just my analog cab sim), and this thing sounds much better right out of the gate.

Having said that, I still like most of my tone to come from a guitar speaker, and I have the perfect solution for that right now. As nice as this would be, on a pedalboard with my Stomp XL, as a flyrig, I just kind of did a fly gig with the Stomp and GM running silent, that is small enough, ya know?

I don't think this would be any better than what I'm doing now, it's just shiny and new, that's all. And of course, smaller and lighter :rofl

That's where I'm at. I want a Friedman BE-100 but I don't need 100 watts (or even 20 watts), and I don't want to spend $4,000 (or even $1,500) on an amp just to run it into a load box or attenuator to bring it down to half a watt.

Compared to a Synergy preamp, the BE-2 module plus a SYN-1 would be nearly double the cost of this preamp pedal. And this has switches too. So if this gets you generally a two channel BE preamp with a switchable boost, plus you have the bonus of IR cab sim if needed, and MIDI if you really want to get funky...that's actually a sweet deal for $500.
