NAM: Neural Amp Modeler

Looks like we're getting a pretty cool enhancement soon for NAM.

"Slimmable" NAM profiles - you can train normal, very accurate models & use a slider in the NAM plugin to trade off accuracy for resource utilisation.

That's awesome for both users and creators:

- users with less powerful machines can figure out where their sweet spot is
- creators can train 1 single profile at the maximum desired quality & let users decide how they want to use it (full size / accuracy or trimm it down)

A new architecture's coming as well, alongside the STANDARD one we've been used to up until now & judging by the paper Steve's published, it looks like it performs slightly better than STANDARD :D

I would have strongly preferred optimization so the full models are less processor intensive, and maybe that's still in the works, but this is a pretty good idea and perhaps a lot better than the file conversion the cheap players have been doing.

Just grabbed gigfast lite on iOS (half price for Black Friday). I also grabbed a cheap guitar jack to usb-c cable so I can direct to an iPad for home use (instead of using an interface).

Pretty stoked on this setup for living room shreds. Kind of funny that I have a room full of gear about 7 meters away and this is an exciting portable setup, but it is what it is 😆

The sound out of the iPad speakers is obviously horrendous but it reminds me of 90s modellers (does the job). Maybe I’ll flesh out something with a small interface and speakers or even big brain this into the back of a combo amp at some point. But for now it’s a pretty neat setup for practicing on the go

I keep thinking about grabbing a ToneX Plug for the same reason. For when I want to sit on the couch and not at the computer.

Which one? And is latency more or less bearable?
It’s bearable but noticeable. Slight constant lag very very short but there.
I just yolod the cable from Amazon and if it didn’t work or was horrendous I would have sent it back. It’s passable for what I want which is just couch practicing scales and it works fine there. If I go into fast thrash riffs or super fast lead tempos it might get mildly annoying but eh, it’s cheap.

There’s a free crunch amp from nembrini and it has the same feel as gigfast so I don’t think gigfast is causing any more than any other app, this is what they’re saying in the settings

I don't think that these are reflecting the actual RTL latency numbers (as every so often), but then, I may just need to try out one of these things myself one day.

Fwiw, apart from Tonocracy (which is adding everything to it's database - not a shiny solution, either), there doesn't seem to be any single NAM loading plugin that would actually allow you to relocate a missing NAM file.
Genome is coming up with "Filename.nam (missing)", OG NAM Player is coming up with "(Failed) Filename.nam" and by far the worst (non-) "solution" is coming from the NAM Universal player which is simply loading the first file in the last used directory, without even telling you which file is missing.

It's things like that why NAM isn't ready for prime time yet. If you ever purchase a new computer or decide to move files to another storage device, everything is broken. Your projects and your presets are all just going *poof*.
Remembering the missing file name and manually typing it (there's no ways to copy the name so you could paste it into your computers file search) is crap already. Navigating to that location is the next crappy thing. It's almost impossible in case you've used tons of files over years.

Btw, most IR loading plugins are every bit as bad. In fact, even HX Native (a commercial product) is that bad (in fact, it's even worse as it doesn't even tell you the file name), but at least you can perform a global backup.

Programmers need to learn from software samplers. By now, all of them allow you to search for files using various methods.

It's a valid point, 100%. I have fed this back to our team now! :)

it is really easy and nice with genom to use namm profiles
there are really usefull options like
selection input: bright or warm you want to sound
and selecting input source eq (you adjust the namm source here with bass middle treble)
and here also there is selectable amp source type what is details somebody tell please
and also post graphic eq with hi-low pass filters

Thanks for getting in touch and I'm super pleased to hear you are enjoying GENOME. The Amp Source type is actually the Tone Stack styles that you can use in conjunction with your NAM captures! Let me know if you need any more information here!
