Alright, finally pulled the trigger and bought my dream tube amp last night.

Never thought I'd own a real Friedman amp. A few years ago it was a big deal to me to get a real Friedman overdrive pedal, and same with the IR-X. Jerry Cantrell is probably my favorite guitarist both for songs (riffs) and for tone. Since I heard the demos, the JJ Junior has basically been my dream amp if I were to go away from modelers.

When I saw this amp on FB Marketplace a few weeks ago, right after they were discontinued, it got stuck in my head. So I decided to sell my Quad Cortex and bank the cash in case it was still available. It was, and I got a heck of a deal on an amp in excellent shape.

Running it through my Orange 1x12 it sounds a lot better than the Orange Rocker 15. The sound is smoother with a much deeper low end, the gain is way more natural and less fizzy sounding, and the clean tone is much better. It is crazy loud though so I can barely crack the master volume at home. It still sounds good at conversation levels but it's difficult to get/keep it there.

One issue I have though is with the effects loop. I tried running a JHS little black amp box in the loop which is a passive volume knob but got some hum. Then I tried an HX Stomp in the loop for effects and volume control, same thing. Running 4CM was even worse, tons of noise. Ground lift didn't help.

Did a little reading this morning and saw comments about running the cables towards the input of the amp and away from the power side. Sure enough that brought the noise way down. If you pass the cable over the amp you can hear the hum get really loud. That's a little concerning but I may have to get some better shielded cables?

I'll be messing around with the amp for a while as I ponder next steps such as swapping out the speaker/cab or thinking about potential attenuators. I've got a Torpedo reactive load I may try using to insert the amp to my Axe FX 3 and hear the difference there. Too bad the direct out with built in reactive load always has some level of mic/cab sim baked in.

Hell yeah, man!!! I keep seeing these pop up for under $1K and it’s REALLY hard not to impulse buy one. Such killer amps! Hopefully being discontinued doesn’t wreck used prices too bad, I want to get one at some point!

Yeah knowing how dumb guitarists can be (Bad Monkey), I was wondering if these would start to go up. Getting one now for under $1k seems like a good entry point.

Congrats man! That effects loop thing will keep me away from it, but I've always wanted one of these.

A friend of mine actually had one, and I brought it to a gig once, but as soon as a turned it on, it was making some high pitched whine, and I never got to use it on the gig, and then never again, lol.

Yeah it's pretty odd for a higher end amp to have the noise issue. Surprisingly the Orange works really well with low noise in 4CM. As I don't gig if it's something I can just route cables differently and not have an issue I'd be fine, but I'll have to monitor.

Congrats on the JJ jr! Loved mine when I had it! As far as the fx loop, mine was dead silent in 4cm with a Boss MS3, and hummed to no end with a Line 6 HXFX. Go figure.

Congrats!
Killer amp..
How does it sound w/ the v30 at low volumes?

Pretty good though could be better. A lot of the fizziness and lack of low end from the Orange Rocker is much better with the JJ even at super low volumes. And clean tone is a lot better than the natural channel, a little more scooped mid and pushed lows and highs (although there's a switch to get a super bright or dark clean tone too). I do hear some of the papery upper midrange though which is the speaker/cab. But overall it's pretty good.

I'll probably at some point get the matching 1x12 cab with Creamback because I'd like that speaker anyway and haven't loved the Orange 1x12.

This is pretty damn sweet:

Running the guitar into the Axe 3 out into the JJ Junior into a Two Notes reactive load into the Axe FX 3. It sounds killer here, honestly a good deal better than the model. The real amp has a bigger but tighter low end and more presence in the high end without fizziness. The model sounds kind of muddy and smeared in comparison. Clean channel also sounds great, and no noise in this setup.
