Mick Mars Home Tour

I'd rather listen to select MC, Dokken and Ratt albums a BAZILLION times over that G'N'R turd

But I hear where you're coming from, especially these days. I loved Appetite for quite a while, but I think it's finally worn itself out for me. Have no interest in hearing any of it ever again.

The difference is that Home Sweet Home brought the women. Van Halen and Quiet Riot didn’t have that critical element of the formula.

See also: Bon Jovi, Def Leppard (post Hysteria)
Yeah, Van Halen didn't bring in the women. By the way, my girlfriend's first album she bought was Metal Health. She can't stand Motley Crue at all. I guess she's a figment of my imagination.

? It seems to me VH had a lot of female appeal with DLR and EVH. Wasn't VH known for having more women than most hard rock acts at their shows (although I was too young at the time, so this is based on what I've read, etc)?

I'm patiently awaiting the mental gymnastics on this one.

I remember when the Black Crowes Shake Your Money Maker came out, as a 15 year old that didn't know a whole lot of music beyond what was played on radio/MTV during my lifetime, I was like "OOOOHH! this is like, what Guns and Roses were kind of shooting for?? But really, really, really missed the mark? Because THIS is good."

I don't think that's what GnR were shooting for at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't either, but the hype at the time was that GnR was some sort of raw rock n roll antidote to typical hair metal and I was like "well, if this is the alternative, it kinda sucks". And then I heard actual raw rock n roll antidote to hair metal and was like "Oh, yeah, THIS is the shit."

Not as much during the Roth years. They had more than many hard rock bands, but in general it was the music that drew the women to the bands first. Once Sammy joined, the music shifted and became more “female friendly,” which is when things really took off for them.

The way it worked was that if you could attract the women with the power ballad or pop-tinged songs, you were pretty much guaranteed huge success.

That might make sense if Vh 78 and 1984 didn't sell as many as the Sammy stuff combined.

VH 78 and 1984 are certified diamond, which means in excess of 10 million sales in the USA. VH 78 peaked at number 19 on the charts when it actually meant something. "Crossover"? Please, show me a hard rock band that crossed over and sold as much with their first album.

Yeah, VH did that solely based on a mostly male audience.

Every album with Sammy hit number one. And you can’t cross over with your first album, because it’s your first album. Metallica crossed over with the black album, Def Leppard crossed over with Hysteria, Motley Crue crossed over with Theatre Of Pain, AC/DC crossed over with Back In Black…

Van Halen crossed over with 1984.
