Ironically, I hark back to the simple, raw elegance of e.g. "I'm Eighteen" and think, "Surely, they can do that again, and surely it would be fucking awesome. No?"

Alas, everyone is 100, and dredging for content for social media, and basically dead inside.

As much of a diehard Vai fan I am, I can’t say I’ve ever used his music for the hard times. Kinda hard to hit the feels with munchkin voices and some of the happiest guitar playing I’ve ever heard.

RJD's lyrics were dopey nonsense. (He'd write them sitting in front of his TV watching baseball - very metal.) But he'd at least keep things moving along briskly enough to achieve something close to "enigmatic". (That's the good version of "dopey nonsense".) Also the guitar riffs were bad(ass) AF.

It's the repetition and the "hi, I am a rock musician who is really rocking at you" schtick that makes me insane. Just. So. Redundant. "OK OK I CAN SEE WITH MY OWN TWO EYES THAT YOU PEOPLE ARE ROCKING RIGHT NOW!"

Yeah, it's kind of the Hard Rock version of "Put your hands in the air like you just don't care".

I actually think it is more of a parallel to rap/hip hop where lyrics boasting about themselves has been a part of the tradition forever. Not that that is a good thing.
