Doesn’t the Neve transformer color the tone? I think it was designed to.
I'm not sure it does really. I've compared various signals through it over the years, never detected any colouration. I do have a couple of Behringturd Ultra-G DI boxes which can do a speaker level THRU as well, so maybe I'll compare. But I'm pretty satisfied with how the Neve sounds.

Ooooooo.... the plot thickens.....

I did a reamp into my Orange Rockerverb MKIII. First using the Neve DI box. It sounds good. Then I switched to the Behringturd Ultra-G DI box.

With the Ultra-G, the level was a LOT louder... like, tear my head off loud accidentally because my monitors were too loud. Okay... I noticed the pads were not engaged... engaged one of them... a nice healthy level. No hum, no buzz, nothing like that.

my RME interface gain has not changed between these two clips. But you can see the level different I am getting.

And as you can see, it isn't like the Ultra-G is clipping to all mayhem or anything.

Why would the Neve be so quiet in comparison?? I don't know yet. Need to research. My first thought is, maybe it is damaged somehow. But first, continuing with my Rockerverb comparison.

ooooo... and I swear down the Ultra-G has more high-frequency content!

When I level match the clips and compare:

There are some very very minute differences.

Is it possible one is putting out instrument or mic level while the other is putting out line?
 
These days I make direct captures with the amp connected to a cab and a Neve RNDI between the amp/cab to get the direct signal. On Stadium when I’ve made clones like this, the direct clone + IR sounds really close to the amp+cab clones I’ve made at the same settings, but again, I prefer the amp+cab clones.
Man, I’ve had the RNDI for years and it’s never occurred to me to use it this way. Thanks for the reminder! I’ve been curious to try Proxy for myself but I don’t have a proper load box, this solves it. Thanks.

I suppose so - I think most anything you put in the signal chain will color things to some extent - some much more subtly than others. The direct captures I've made with the RNDI and cab connected sound much better than doing the same capture connected solely to a load box, and I've always attributed that improvement to having the cab connected, but perhaps the RNDI is making more of an improvement than I thought? I'll do some more experimenting to see.

One thing with the RNDI and Proxy clones... To make an amp-only clone, you'll need to use the 1/4" in (FX Loop 4 In). The RNDI needs to be connected via XLR with Phantom power, so you can't really just output RNDI straight to Stadium to make the clone. The way I do it is I connect the RNDI to a mic input on my audio interface (Apollo), and then I pass the signal through one of the outputs in Apollo to Stadium. This lets me fine tune the level out of the amp into Stadium as well.

I do essentially the same thing when making amp+cab captures. Both mics/pres/EQ go into Apollo, get summed to mono, and sent out to Stadium's XLR input for the clone.
