Line 6 Helix Stadium Talk

After my attempt at a home-made fuzz yesterday (results in the preset thread), it's my first time I've tried capturing an amp with Stadium - I've only gone for two settings but will do more at some point - I've attached the clones for you to try if you fancy. I'm really pleased with how they've come out - I tried profiling this with my Kemper Mk1 when I first got it and, although I really liked my Kemper, I just couldn't get it to sound anything like the amp. I figured it was me. These captures do sound like the amp IMO.

This is a Matamp C7 - they were launched in 2004 and I'm told that only 500 were made. It's a master volume only weird thing - it's billed as 7 watts but it's insanely loud. It came with an attenuator that looks like something from the BBC special effects department in 1974. The matching cabinet is loaded with a Celestion G12m, stating that it was made in Ipswich. I remember the factory as I lived not far away back then - sadly no longer there.

There's a lovely harmonic richness to the tones that come out of this - if you've got a guitar with P90's on it, just play an A minor chord, open position, and let it ring. There's a lot going on there which you'll either like or not. I do :)

I've captured it using a Senheisser e906 (that's the most suitable mic I have for this). I did one capture with bass, middle and treble at noon and the volume at 9 o'clock on the dial (so that's a volume of around 2-3 I guess.... I then did another capture with the volume at full blast. The tone controls on here are pretty interactive so there's lots of places I could go but..... for my first go, I left all of them pointing due North to see what would happen. Tbf, they're a decent starting point for a range of guitars rather than being dialled in for anything in particular - the clean is a little dark but I like it that way....

There's an 'attack' control on here which I left in the off position for both these captures; it's a weird feedback circuit that makes things particularly rowdy. I'll have a go at that and some different tone settings another day but I'll need to wait till my wife is out and Albert is at the other end of the house as the capture process caused him to make this face when I considered doing another one.

I'm playing with making a preset that has both clones in there plus my fuzz from yesterday. If I can get that right, I'll share. Needing the reverb to sound a little different right now but maybe that's still my ears ringing from the capture process!!

On the sound of tubes, I used to have a THD Univalve and got a box full of different preamp and power amp tubes to hear the differences. Honestly it was not night and day, different preamp tubes had different gain levels and different power amp tubes had different overall volume / saturation / slight EQ tilt. Everything ran through the same 4x12 cab and same amp circuit.

Outside of that the only big difference tubes ever made for me was replacing old, blown, or microphonic tubes. And that's more fixing an issue than improving the tone.

Has anyone compared the old vs new Rockerverb models? what kind of differences are you hearing?

It was one of the first things i tried when 1.3.0 dropped.

tl;dr it's the same story with all Agoura models, Tonally, they're not miles apart - the new models are a bit more "hi-fi" and harmonically rich than their HX counterparts, but old Helix is no slouch. What Agoura excels at IMHO, is dynamics. Amps react much better to picking nuances and volume changes, and feel much better to play as a result.

The Agoura Rockerverb 100 MKIII in particular does a great mid-gain rock crunch. If you like Clutch or Mastodon, it's where it's at.

I've had my Stadium Floor for about a month, and i totally get now why people were raving about the "feeling" of it, which is normally something impossible to quantify. From other stuff i tried, only Fractal seems to do it as well.

EDIT:

Here are reamps of the Rockerverb HX (in Stadium), Agora and a Clone. Had to increase the gain on the Clone.

Good stuff. Very representative of how HX and Agoura models sound, IMHO.
