Line 6 Helix Stadium Talk

I finally got around to trying out the new US Super Black model. I have no rapport with its real world counterpart but it's a pretty nice model that I got some nice cleans out of, as well some fun pushed sounds by throwing the Prize Drive in front of it. It's another I have a note to spend some more time with. For reasons I can't elaborate on, I never got on super well with the OG Helix Fender models. The Agoura ones I'm finding myself liking.
Did you ever get a chance to try the more recent Super Reverb HX model? It definitely feels like a step above the older Deluxe and Twin models to me, I wonder how it compares to the Agoura version. I like using it with the 112 Open Cast EV cab or with a York Twin IR.

I spent some time with that one on my OG LT but don't recall getting more than so-so results with it, but that was most likely more me than the model. Might be worth revisiting that one since I'm pretty sure that preset was one of the ones I ported over to Stadium.

My wife snuck something under the tree late last night. My strategy of leaving the Stadium XL and AM-4 hardware scattered in her home office a couple times last week paid off.

Nice! How do you like it?
Too soon to say. I was such a huge fan of the OG backpack design that this thing has a steep, borderline unfair hill to climb.

Right off the bat I would have concerns about a hard impact with this bag where I would NOT with the original backpack. I’m also feeling like the way the bag hangs accentuates every pound it’s carrying and it is balancing very top heavy. I’m going to flip the hardware around so the expression pedal is at the bottom of the bag.

Some of these concerns might be resolved with more time with it.

However, after watching the video Scott made, seeing the transport controls occupy scribble strips I realized I’d love that and makes me wonder if I’ll miss out with that non- XL choice?

I believe the non-XL version will have a mode where the touchscreen shows what the buttons are assigned to.

I think the QC has something similar.

Yeah, me too. I was even considering getting that again, but not sure if it’d would be too big. I guess I could stuff some kind of cushion down there to keep it fixed in place.

The other thing is I would only transport it once per month, so dropping $300 on it, also had me pausing a bit. I could probably do with something less premium tbh.

I am going to order some screen protectors from Amazon tho before bringing it out of the house!

So this last year I've acquired my all-time favourite guitar. I have a nice stable now of a Strat, a Les Paul, and two Custom 24s, and I have Helix Stadium XL on the way as the new cornerstone of my rig.

The only thing I really need now is a good wireless, and I'm looking at the Shure GLX. How is everyone integrating a wireless with Helix if they're not using a board with other pedals? I have a 15 meter power cable for use with my Helix, but I'd need to connect the Shure receiver close by too. I'm thinking of maybe using something like this cable from Amazon. What’s everyone else doing?

My Shure guitar and IEM wireless units are in a 4U shallow rack with power and a drawer for transmitters/receiver, batteries, IEMs, and cables. Works well for me. Haven’t changed that in years.

Okay i know it can be done with the OG, and i feel like im missing a step here ,
But im looking to have a row of snaps on bottom, and Stomps on top,
I go into global , footswitches, change the mode 1 knob to ( all i can see thats close is, combo )
But its snaps on bottom and presets on top ,
The manual is a little vague here and not sure if I can attain what im looking to do,
Bonus notes, can I get rid the bank switches to have 5 snaps and 5 Stomps, if this can be done ?

I've now had the Stadium for over a month and I am closing in fast on having to make a decision if the Stadium stays, gets returned, or I keep it a bit longer and deal with the risks of selling used? At the moment I gyrate between days I love it and want to keep it to days I like the FM3 more. Not the clear cut win I was hoping for. I usually try to stick with a one in one out policy for my main rig, but as of now I'm not sure... I'm guessing others are also nearing the end of their return window and I'm wondering what others are going to do?

Here are my current thoughts about the Stadium.
  • Pros
    • UI: Unquestionably the best UI I have used on a modeler. I have owned Fractal, Helix, QC, and Headrush devices. No experience with the TMP. The screen is clear and touch response is nearly iPhone level.
    • OLED scribble strips are more readable than the backlit LCD scribble strips on Fractal, although I've not used the MK II devices with bigger scribble strips.
    • Amp Tones: There are a few models I actually like more on Stadium than my FM3 when doing a direct comparison using a ABY foot switch (Revv, Bogner and Vox), while others I have no strong preference and others I like less (Marshall and Mesa). I also really like having more of the channels and switches built into a single model (Revv Purple for example) vs being split apart into separate models like Fractal does. Unfortunately, Revv, 5153, etc. must still be separate models for blue/red and purple/red, etc.
    • Effects: Some of the effects are really great and as good or better than the equivalent found on Fractal.
  • Neutral
    • Screen size: I feel like the unit is bigger than it needs to be due to screen size. I think a wide screen the same width as the current screen, but an inch or so less tall would have been nearly as usable while allowing for a smaller unit.
    • Focus View: For all intents and purposes it is 5 block presets with inbetween settings. I love the idea of blocks having presets built into the unit. But I would be just as happy with a list of 5+ block presets to get me started and give me ideas.
    • Hype knob: Sometimes I like a little, but most of the time I don't like what it does and don't use it.
    • Showcase: I haven't found a use for this yet, so no opinion.
  • Cons
    • No channels in blocks: This missing feature really reduces the amount of DSP available the way I use snapshots/scenes. I commonly set up two snapshots for cleans, often something like a double reverb with matching cab. Two crunch snapshots with something like a 5153 blue or Mesa yellow with matching cab. Two plus lead snapshots with something like a 5153 red or Mesa red with matching cab. With Fractal this only requires one amp block and one cab block. With the Stadium it requires 3x3 to do the same thing. In my testing this can eat up nearly 75% of available DSP when using Stadiums new amps.
    • DSP limitations are more apparent than I would expect from a next generation modeler. But as previously mentioned, I chalk this up to not having block channels.
    • Foot switch flexibility: the foot switching is not nearly as flexible as Fractal.
    • Limited number or amp models. In the occurrences where I preferred a model on the Stadium, Vox AC30 for example, I can often find an alternative model I like even more in the Fractal. In this case I preferred the Morgan AC20 over the Stadium AC30, and I still have a Matchless on the Fractal to try.
    • Speaker Impedance Curve: SIC implementation is okay with just one amp or cab. Use more than one amp or an IR and it gets really wonky or just downright bad. Fractal handles SIC much better.
    • Computer Editor: I'm glad it exists as I use it a lot. But definitely prefer Axe Edit.
    • Effects: effects earn a place on the pros and cons list. While some sound great, others don't sound as good to me or are just missing compared to FM3.
    • Amps: another that earns a place on both the pros and cons lists. Some amp models I like less than those in the Fractal.
    • Bugs: Lock ups, loss of sound without reboot, etc. I'm sure they will get it sorted out, but there are more major bugs than expected.
    • Price: At twice the price of an FM3 and around 25% more than directly competing products, I guess I hoped for more.
I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting at the moment, but I think this is a pretty complete list. So what have other Stadium users decided?

Based on your well described details, I would return it and try again later. You seem to prefer the FM3 at half the cost.

Is there any chance you buy it again down the road? If so, keep it.

For me:

If it was my only digital device I'd have kept it. But for me, all roads lead back to FAS....and the AM4 is 1/3 the price

I would never say never. But it would be dependent on features improved and added and of course what the competition does. A next generation Fractal device would definitely be hard to resist.
