Line 6 Helix Stadium Pre-Launch Discussion

"It sounds great, and i'm not just - and i'm not just saying that."
Yeah I can pick up on those small moments where someone goes off autopilot and is genuinely impressed.

To be fair Ola isn’t really on autopilot as much as other dudes, hell generally just say something sucks until he dials it in. But yeah what an endorsement 🤣

Coming from the perspective of someone who has some of the high gain amps modeled in HX and regularly tracks them direct, I have to push back a bit here.

Yes, there are some great high gain tones that can approximate the sound of the amps they target with debatable levels of accuracy, but IMO the Hx models don’t FEEL like the real deal counterparts to me. The feel is better than prior generations, but a gap still exists.

What’s interesting to me is that many of these reviews of the stadium have the players reacting to something we can’t experience in the videos, often called out as “feel” or “dynamics” or whatever. Seemingly, this gen is more amp like. That’s what is being expressed universally by everyone I’ve seen play it.

Anyway, my point is that modeling can clearly still improve. The increments will get smaller, but it’s gonna keep happening. Hx sounds great. Stadium likely sounds (and feels) better.
I have to say I feel pretty strongly that the Axe FX 3 edged out the Helix models in most situations for me. You're totally right, there's a feel thing going on that is difficult to talk about, especially when people act like cunts about the word feel. But that's besides the point.

But I really don't think Stadium is going to be the same experience. I think Stadium is set to absolutely take the crown. I'm turning into a bit of a fanboy sure. But I really feel a lot of positivity and promise with this one.

What kind of music do you play? What is your sound reproduction unit?
More blues and edge of breakup styles like Gary Clark jr stuff…some world music/ ambient style as well. Not really any chugging metal stuff or heavy metal.
I will say that I was heavily looking at the fractal stuff, but at this point being that I’m more of a visual person I really need some type of bigger on screen touchscreen type interface because being more visual and less technical it just is more comfortable to work with
My old Vox tone lab SE floor pedal was nice. I still use it. It’s very simple layout, even though it didn’t have a big screen. Every single thing had a knob to control it so I still to this day really enjoy that whole set up interface thing and kind of would prefer it Like if a unit had exactly that style of layout but the screen was like say the roll in GT one even basic screen I would be happy with that because I really liked my GT one when I had it. The screen was very bright and the resolution was very clear. It wasn’t a touchscreen but for the price point you know at that time it was interesting.

Massively agreed. I’ll no doubt get an axe4 whenever it comes out but I just don’t see fractal moving the needle much in terms of usability (I’d love to be wrong but just realistic)

Stadium being on par sound wise but also having great usability and eventually capturing, it really is ticking all the boxes and will seemingly excel in all areas.

Last gig I did playing that sort of stuff was backing up a great female singer. UA Dream set to break up (footswitches set to reverb and trem), DOD 250, EJ fuzz face, Bonamassa Wah. Best tone I had in a long long time. If your tone needs aren't all over the place like mine, I strongly suggest - if you haven't already - to try an UA amp sim with a few pedals. It's awesome.

I can't have them sounding anywhere near what I like without a lot of tweaking. Not a fan of the amp modeling on Helix as a whole, but the Bogner Ecstasy specially - I think there's something wrong with it. It's a far cry compared to what a real Bogner Ecstasy sounds like. IMO

I would have to agree with you on the XTC. We waited a long time for it - something seems off.

How about using the Stadium as the USB interface and the ADA8200 as additional inputs to Stadium? Does that work? It looks like the D10 only has digital out.
Is there a manual for Stadium available?
Expand D10 only has ADAT out, not in, so the ADA8200's mic pres would be wasted. But at $179, how big a deal is that really?

Also, Stadium/Nexus isn't designed to be a massive 24 or 32-channel live console either.

But I really don't think Stadium is going to be the same experience.
One of the more effective marketing pieces that stuck with me from the OG Helix era was a video montage consisting of various guitarists play testing Helix Floor for the first time in a studio. Their reaction to the dynamics and interaction was front and center, IMO a brilliant approach. Seeing their reactions made me want to experience that difference for myself.

We’re seeing the same thing now with stadium, albeit in perhaps a more organic manner spread out through clips from the events this past weekend. There’s clearly a sonic difference, but whatever is happening with feel must kick ass because it seems to dominate the conversation. I’m very excited to plug this thing in, crank up the cans, and see what’s new.

It seems to me like Cliff over at fractal’s not gonna go with the whole touchscreen route but I may be wrong. I hope he does because can you imagine a fractal FM nine with the helix touchscreen on it? Oh my God
Someone who knows how to do Photoshop or do a rendering of that

But I should be able to get that out of the stadium, shouldn’t I?
