Probably to mentally lock in. Can’t speak for anyone else but I’ll always track the tightest and cleanest when I’m using headphones. I basically only use headphones for tracking these days. General playing and everything else over monitors.

YMMV but I can’t imagine sitting in a control room tracking guitar with headphones when there’s incredible monitors there right in front of you. How do you interact with the producer, band mates etc?

a lot of times track through headphones and then monitor the full mix back through the monitors.
Either way the argument still stands that you're 'not an idiot' if you don't listen to an amp only through a cab. If anything most 'pros' aren't monitoring directly from a cab in many situations either recording or live...if anything the 'amp in the room' sound is the more amateur setup...but that's going to ruffle some feathers haha.
Pretty common to see guys like Bukovac, Tim Pierce, Justin Ostrander, Rob McNelly, etc tracking through headphones.

Not hard to take headphones off/on to talk and then put em on to lay down some tracking then off again. In the context of punk, metal, hardcore and everything in between you want a pretty locked in rhythm section and the headphones have always helped me play as tight as possible. I see plenty of others doing the same.

Why are guitarists so obsessed with the labels “pro” and “amateur” and trying to put everyone into those boxes?
They aren't. It's usually a bunch of guys on forums trying to put people down if they dont use the same setup as them.
I was pointing out that the common notion that it's 'amateur' unless you're listing to the cab directly isn't really the case in most situations.

I track all the time with headphones on. Goes back to high school years. Plenty of people do. Shitty sound?

I see it all the time in guitar forums. It’s been that way forever. Guitarists seem to have an obsession with the classification of “pro”

If a band is tracking live they're going to be in the same room to get visual cues from each other and you can't put a drummer in the control room. Acoustic instruments or singers would be in separate rooms to avoid bleed.
Also each musician will want their own headphone mix so they can hear exactly what they need to perform their best.
That said the goal of these headphones isn't BEST TOAN EVAR it's to hear themselves and the rest of the band clearly so they get the best performance possible.
There's certainly times when overdubs would get tracked in the control room because it's way easier to interact with the producer.

And bedroom. The only time I have ever had gear or played in my bedroom was when I was in college and I only had one room! Do forum guitarists really play in their bedrooms all the time?
I only use it to describe players that are on tour at least once or twice a year and don’t do anything else. Usually with endorsements or back up household name acts .

Well, that's pretty big news to me, because up to now I've thought headphones are used more often in such settings for the purpose of recording itself.
To distinguish from pub players and collectors.
Some of the collectors I work with are the most critical. It totally depends on your perspective. All the digital solutions are easily good enough for commercial use.
