Kemper Profiler MK 2

This thread is a goldmine and it’s only because kemper keeps producing the natural resource of gold

I just caught up on 15 pages and the goal post shifting on accuracy and cope on now needing to use rig profiler, 10/10 amazing.

I’d always wondered how they could have retail locations selling 12 year old hardware. And I guess the player pedal with levels was a move to support that, and now this mk2 which is essentially the exact same unit in a shiny new hat is also a way.

I’m keen to hear some proper comparisons when the v2 firmware drops cause I just don’t believe things are going to be remarkably better. I’ll spare that nail in the coffin until we hear it but for now it’s on the shelf waiting.

If you always wanted a kemper but never pulled the trigger I guess now you’ll get a touch more than you did before. But if you owned one in the past and wanted to check out the new thing I doubt you’d bother. And if you’re already using a modeller you like and just thought oh hey what’s Kemper doing over there…. Same same? Cool, pass. Just seems like the attraction to anyone other than existing users is basically 0

It’s all an extremely strange rollout strategy especially in 2025. They could have brought out the exact same mk2 units with a different marketing strategy and it would have been fine, but the delays of firmware and drip feeding of critical information is just bad look on bad look imo

The ToneX lacks the quantity and quality of efx of the Stage, it lacks the number of foot switches and capabilities, it lacks morphing, latency in patch changes, no spill over, etc. The stage is just a better tool for gigging hands down. This is assuming you need a variety of sounds for your gig and need to change within a song of course.

That’s why you build a board around it. Or a preamp like Friedman, Victory, etc.

Just to make things even less clear, nowhere on the web page that announces the new profiling do they mention accuracy. They say it is "the most precise", but that leaves a lot of wiggle room for interpretation.

It mentions it on their SW page but yeah not on the home page:

"The Profiler MK 2 series raises the bar on profiling precision, enhancing Kemper’s industry-leading emulation with a smattering of cutting-edge technologies. Profiles now analyze more than 100,000 individual frequency points to deliver the highest level of sonic accuracy possible"

When I said

I was going beyond just the hypothetical ‘for others choice’ of Stage mkII vs ToneX for gigging answer.
At that point I was copping to the “good enough” benchmark as my own preference. But I don’t think Paisley Wookie would agree with that “lowly” standard.
It was a snarky way of saying ToneX sucks so bad that ‘I would even take a mkI Stage over it’. Because I actually did do that in fact.

(Sorry for the cockup but there is a reason I am an HVAC/R contractor and not celebrated author or tenured English professor)

The highest possible? Wouldn't adding one more frequency point make it higher? Maybe it made sense in the original German.
 
re: a Null Test

Been doing a bit of reading - always a dangerous thing - and came across an interesting comment in a Y/T Comments section - but I don't know if its correct or not (?)

Just using NAM and Tonex as an example against a real amp.

Is the following right ?

Say NAM Null tests to a real Amp at -40 LUFS
Say Tonex Null Tests against the same real Amp at -37 LUFS

Apparently it is not that straight forward ?

For example, Tonex could reproduce the Frequencies below 50hz and above 18khz not as well and that will account for the lower LUFS Score difference.

However, as these frequencies <50hz and above >18khz are basically irrelevant to a guitar signal, there are actually no effective differences between the 2 .... their conclusion being that a Null test may (?) not be the most correct picture for meaningful accuracy comparison.

Any validity or truth or "accuracy" to this ?
 
Kemper will be the most accurate. Until somebody comes out with a capture that does 100,001 frequency points.
