Interested in the new JCM-900 20 watt head.

I always liked using the 900 on the QC, which I assume was the DR version. It was a little “thin” in the caboose, but I liked the gain profile generally.

I’ve had the SLX in my Reverb saved search for a long while. Need to eventually pull the trigger.

I like the DR quite a bit. Whenever I have to use a backline, I'm happy if a DR is there. Easy to get a good rock tone out of it.

Any more real life reviews of the 20 watt version. I am thinking of getting the head. I have had the old school Dual Master (aka SLX) and Dual Reverbs in the past and I was always able to get decent tones out of them on stage. Supposedly these newer ones are revoiced a bit and warmer sounding?

I think the 900s get a bad rap because they’re not the 800s and that’s it. While I don’t have much experience with the DR I have used the Mk III and SL-X (more so the SL-X) and was always able to get great sounds out of them. The additional preamp tube in the SL-X darkened the voicing a little bit the midrange bark is very much Marshall. I likened that amp to the Deliverance in how the two gain controls interacted. Not as hi fi mind you but it’s still a good Marshall. They need volume.

I have used the Mk III and SL-X (more so the SL-X) and was always able to get great sounds out of them.

IMO a lot of the trauma people experience with the 900 is solely rooted in the use of the Dual Reverb model, which is a different animal when compared to the III and SL-X.

The III and SLX both sound great and get a bad wrap unnecessarily.
