IK Multimedia TONEX

Wonder if there is enough processing power…

Definitely not on the One, but it's been talked about as a possible next gen. I think an effects only box like the VP4 to pair with Tonex might be a good option for them as well. Maybe better than trying to compete with the flagship all in ones.

Good for all gigs, except proms and golf courses.

I ran a Tonex & HXFX rig for a couple years as a backup rig and it was an absurdly capable system. The only critique I had was the lack of a means to digitally connect the two devices to skip the extra conversion stages.

My suspicion is we eventually see something approaching a flagship with a lot of the amplitube IP integrated. A V2 Tonex pedal with some more digital connectivity would be enticing but I’m a little afraid of what that price point ends up looking like in our current market situation. L6 was painting a grim picture of what they are dealing with trying to find a path to ship something like a Stadium Stomp. A $600 Tonex V2 starts to creep awfully close to the much more capable AM4 in terms of price.

much more capable, come on. The AM4 is limited to block count, the effects loop is useless and it doesn't include many blocks that it should. If Tonex v2 comes out as more of an all in one then it will do very well.

I like the Tonex concept, but the pedals are lacking. The AM4 is a lot more capable, and I too would like to see this concept come to Tonex.

Tonex only competes well on the amp piece. I think the effects capability would need a massive upgrade to be at AM4/VP4 level. If they can do that, then yes they can compete at $600, but I don't know that they could do that profitably. Development isn't cheap.

I don't think the development would be overly costly. They already have decent pedals and amplitube from which to harvest.
Thinking out loud 1000Usd hopefully with dual amps and parallel paths
Then they'll have their flash huge deal monthly sales offers

Have you used both? In practice there’s a significant difference in their capabilities. For one, the FX in the AM4 are actually usable if not industry leading. Tonex FX sound like the free stuff you got with pro tools back in the early 2000s.

The more I think about it, maybe an AM4 style device could be IK’s path forward. Fractal found a way to keep cost down on the AM4. Hard to say what levers IK has to pull.

You have to remember that I am not a fanboi of Fractal. I have had the AX3, AM4, VP4 and and I currently have the FM9 (and the Stadium) I have 3 tonex pedals and that is my preferred platform. IMO the Fractal effects are either overdone or not done well enough. It makes sense that Cliff keeps redoing them. The pitch block is still a mess, the chorus was just redone, the overdrives still don't sound right. . What is in the tonex is very limiting. The gate is awful, the amps are the best IMO, and the other effects are just okay. If IK actually put some effort into using their good effects, it would be a great second attempt.

The ToneX effects are basically just free stuff thrown in, but if they pulled some effects from Amplitube and T-Racks into a bigger pedal, it could be comparable.

I agree, I just don’t think it’s possible on the current hardware. I’m just guessing though. It would shake up the market if they pulled it off.

Yeah, I think it will require more powerful hardware. I think that is the only reason they haven't added an OD block, because that is easily the #1 request.

They need to also exchange the crappy gate with the star gate, or Dimebag gate from Amplitube.

Just getting familiar with the ToneX editor, dont use nothing but a specific Amp/Cab into my FM9 so all of the rest is pretty irrelevant for me once I have loaded the amp/cab, FM9 handles the chain and effects.
