I do it a little differently but same concept.

Bank 1 might be 3 amp tones for use with an amp and cab.
Bank 2 would be the same 3 presets as above but the headphone versions.
Bank 3 would be the same 3 agains but EQ'd for the CLR (FRFR).

Part of the reason I did it this way originally was so I could set the switches to work on press and not release and that makes it harder to bank up and down without an external switch. That said, I find I am never doing mid song switching anyway. If you are used to multichannel amps, YMMV.

You should be able to audition from the Editor right?

Not really the first step, more like the end. You have to get things into the library to get into the editor unless I am not seeing this properly. Just randomly pulling tones off tonenet and then transferring them across multiple SW and then finally onto the pedal to see how it sounds with my amp is time consuming so I was looking to see if there was a better way.

I'm more interested in how it sounds on the pedal hooked to my amp, not on the computer running through a DAW with desktop speakers, not that there is anything wrong with that. I just dont have that kind of setup...

This one includes DI (no cab) captures of the amp and signal chain at a bunch of voltages with regular and hot versions for those who want to use real cabs or their own IR's/external cab sims. I am looking forward to trying them out.

Played with this all weekend and IMO, it sounds pretty good. I have about 5 presets set up for practice with the band tomorrow night. I have it with Amps no cabs or IR's and will be going through my cab.

I got @2112 ToneX tones to learn how to load/edit presets and they sound great through my setup. Very minor tweaks on those were needed, not a bad investment at all for around $5 USD and it probably saved me hours picking through Tonenet. I also picked up his free IR and when going through headphones, it's nice to have and sounds great.

I'm still working on the best workflow with this and I am going to spend some time integrating it with my Stomp XL this afternoon after work, but so far this thing is a keeper.

Any additional tips are appreciated.

Question for anyone -

I am trying to run my tonex pedal and my Stomp XL in 4cm so that I can bypass everything and get my amp tone vs a preset with either unit.

I have my Stomp XL set up in 4CM with my amp and I have the Output of the stomp going into the input of the Tonex and then the output of the tonex into the return of my amp. In essence (I think) both my Stomp and my Tonex are in the amp's Efx loop, but can go straight in for that raw amp tone once I turn off the loop on the stomp. If I am looking at this wrong, please correct me.

My amp is a modded Origin 50H and it's tone is closer to a Plexi sound than what I have dialed in so far with the Stomp or Tonex, so I want to keep that amp tone available. I play a lot of the crunchy songs our band plays with it.

So here is/are my question(s) -

1. Is there a better way to do this where I can have presets from my stomp not affected by Tonex and vise versa and still use my raw amp tone as a preset. It would probably make sense to eventually Capture my amp and make it a Tonex preset, but that 's for later down the road.

2. The bypass in the Tonex pedal is not a true bypass, and it definitely "colors" it a little and takes out a little of the top end sparkle. As a bar cover band, it's not that critical, but just wondering if that slight tone coloring can be eliminated or made better?


Overall, happy with things so far and taking it to band practice tonight so I can test it at live volume vs living room volume. I'll let you now how it works out.

But take nothing I’ve said as gospel, it’s just my initial thoughts of how I’d approach it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it a try later this week. One of the many good thing about these solutions, is that you can try all different ways and not mess up the one currently working. Lots of storage and places to save things to try.

BTW, the ToneX performed great at band practice tonight. I was able to use the different amp presets for different songs and the volume stayed consistent and where I wanted it better than I thought it would.

Initial honeymoon with Tonex is over (not in a bad way), and I’ve started A/Bing with the Helix (using the same IR for both). Comparing Fenders, honestly I can pretty much get 1:1 on Helix (especially with the newer Fender models in the Helix), which was sort of surprising to me.

The big thing is that the Helix fenders need much more bass and a bit less mids… e.g. if you copy a capture’s listed amp settings and convert it from 1-10 scale to 0-10 for Helix (and set the Helix’s mids to 6.8 in the case of Fenders that don’t have a mid control), you have to turn the Helix model’s bass up quite a bit, and the mids down a little, to match the sound of the capture. Not sure if this is a quality of the Tonex or of the Helix Fender models, but I was noticing it pretty consistently across captures and Helix models, at least Fender ones.

I did some experiments with boosts too, and they definitely both react a little differently. It might be related to the bass control thing? Neither sounds less natural, and I’m not sure which is actually more realistic, but it’s just a little different in how things shift. Not really a compressed vs open feeling either (I say this because I’ve felt before that sometimes the Helix amps can feel a little “closed” or small when pushed with a boost).

Re: “feel”, idk. The Tonex definitely felt “better” when first using it, but I can’t say I felt much different when directly A/Bing. Maybe some dynamics differences at extremes, but that’s about it. So I’m thinking some of this was just bias on my part.

I’m going to compare further, but I’m a little surprised because I’m suddenly feeling happier with the Helix amps than I was for a bit lol

The Tonex still has the advantage of having some amps the Helix doesn’t (Benson amps, my love!), but it does have me wondering… maybe not if I should get rid of Tonex, but if I should replace it with a One as a companion to the Helix amps rather than a more complete thing replacing them.

Tomorrow night / soon I’m going to compare Vox sounds. That is something that has always fallen flat for me in the Helix, so I’m curious. I’m also going to experiment with a fuzz into both.

And yeah, none of this is a knock on Tonex at all (I know what thread I’m in haha). It sounds great. Just experimenting!

Lots of long user requested things have been added such as offline reamping (you can reamp separately to training), queued training (so you can leave it overnight) and adding metadata while it's training. Training file is shorter and slightly less annoying. The time to train is faster on Apple Silicon, although I've only tried advanced modelling so far. It'll stop training once the accuracy hits the limit. You can audition direct tones through an IR (although loading IR's is kind of janky).

Curious to see if the advanced training has closed the gap on NAM at all. Pretty awesome how many of these improvements are directly from things offered by NAM. Its raising the bar for everyone else.

Yes. Haven’t compared yet though. Hopefully it means they’ll binned off that high cut at the least, but accuracy improvements across the board would be welcome.

and set the Helix’s mids to 6.8 in the case of Fenders that don’t have a mid control)

This is going to depend on if Helix models the mid pot as linear or audio. The log/audio mid pots on a BF amp need to be around 9 to give 6.8k of resistance to match the amps without a mid control. I see a lot of people trying to run just below 7 to match the 6.8, but that will give you less gain and less mids, unless it is a linear pot, or a model of a linear pot.
