Oh, to add to this: one thing about these factory captures vs the ones you get from Amalgam, Amp Gems, etc is that the latter give you a lot of different captures of the same amp at different EQ settings, gain levels, on different channels, etc, while with the factory ones you get one or sometimes two or three snapshots of an amp at specific settings. You can still get a lot out of those with the onboard EQ though, and the Depth and Presence controls help a lot too, but yeah.

All of these ones have "(Amp)" at the end of their name, so you can search that in the Tone Model section of the Software Library (Tonex Editor > Librarian [button at the top left] > Software Library [right half of the screen] > Tone Model [button just below "Software Library"]) to find them, or use the filter button there (to the left of "Filters" on that screen) to filter by "TYPE", and then select Amp (the icon looks like an amp head) and/or Amp+Stomp (the icon just to the right of the Amp one).

This is the exact reason I shit-canned Tonex CS when it first came out after a few months and never looked back. I guess I love the pain...

I'm new at this, and I plan to run it without cab sims and IR's are there amp only captures and/or amp + effects? I also read where you can take the cab or IR out of the capture, but it's a hit or miss (mostly Misses) from what I have read.

I'll check out the Partner section when I get everything installed and running.

Some of the packs I have include DI captures without a cabinet. I will release a few more packs very soon that are exclusively DI without a cabinet. They are primarily meant for use with a real cabinet.

Are you running this 4CM? If so, how do you have it wired up? Trying to wrap my head around doing this with my Stomp XL while I wait for it to get here, lol...

I used to run mine with a fx loop in the HXFX preset then you can place the tonex amp where you like it in the chain.

Guitar>HXFX>HXFX send1>tonex in>tonex out>HXFX return 1 iirc

Been destressing with headphone jam sessions in the evening and getting A TON of mileage out of the amalgam Superlead with the Tele. FF is pretty much always on, tele volume knob is controlling the dirt. Everything feels very alive, responsive, and best of all fun to play.

The analog delay might get replaced with space echo but I’m kinda digging it. Maybe both. Who knows.

I noticed there are 2 packs from Amalgam SL100 1969, Core and Expansion. Do you have both or just one?

Have you every tried out the SB67 1967 "Rex"? That one sounds pretty good on the computer too.

The cove vs expansion was an old differentiation he used where the expansion has some different voicing and more captures with pedals in front. Also watch for full captures vs DI packs. The DI ones are captured without a cab but include an IR of the cab if you want to use it.

I’m just using the SL100 core pack with the cabs (non IR). I’ve not used the expansion pack.

I’ve not used the SuperBass pack but that might change in the near future once I add a rangemaster to my board. I’m sure the SB sounds great.

I’m pretty sure amalgam has free caps of most of his amps on tonenet. You should be able to try some.

That's what I figured. I'm more interested in the DI's and then be able to use the IR if I'm on headphones practicing or not if I'm running the full rig with our band or at home.

Worth mentioning that the included IRs with at least some of direct capture expansion packs are different too, and sometimes specialized (e.g. like an extra long IR that attempts to emulate an in-room sound)

Karlis does know what he is doing but his choice of cabs, speakers, microphones and mic locations isn't necessarily going to be what I want and it is always going to be very limited.

I currently and typically own more cabs than amps and I often don't use classic or factory default cab/speaker choices. A DI capture lets me pair a 1960's Marshall head with Celestion Alnicos, 20w greenbacks, 25w greenbacks, 25 and 30w greenbacks with the 55hz bass cones, and also all sorts of non-period correct choices as well. Obviously, either with a real cab or with 3rd party IR's.

The advantage of the full captures is simplicity or if the factory cab is unusual and a big part of the sound, but that's an extreme fringe case as far as I am concerned.

Speaking of Amalgam: for anyone interested in Marshall-but-not type sounds, I highly recommend checking out the samples of his Vox AC50 captures (“VX TB50”). Not being familiar with that amp, I was expecting something more AC30ish, and it does that when cleaned up, but pushed it gets really thick and full, like somewhere between a Tweed Bassman and Marshall.

I might end up grabbing that pack even though it overlaps with the 3 I already plan to buy. It feels like it would be a great all-in-one choice, for a lot of styles anyway.

One warning, Tonex is cheap, but if you get into a capture buying habit, it can get expensive. I pretty much only use my captures and paid captures, but I am careful about what and how many I buy.

I don't know if he is doing a sale now, but Amalgam OFTEN does 5 for the price of 3, 10 for the price of 5 etc. type deals so maybe plan out what you want and take advantage of those deals. 5 or 10 packs from Amalgam should cover a TON of ground for most of us if you choose carefully.

I appreciate the warning! I'm really interested in a select few, hot Rodded 2203/4, late 60's Plexi, and 90's Dual & early 00's Triple Recs, for what we play in the band that I feel like my Stomp XL is lacking. More than likely, I'm just not dialing it in as good as I should but if I can get a handful to cover what I'm lacking so I can spend the time practicing vs tweaking, it's a win/win for me.
