IK Multimedia TONEX

I'm seeing a few Tonex Capture Boxes show up from time to time on FBMP and since I dont have an interface, mic setups, etc. I'm only interested in making DI captures.

Do you, by any chance, have any Helix units? Or another modeler serving as an interface featuring a proper FX loop?

That should work absolutely fine for re-amping. Set up a stereo path, put a loop-send in one path to feed the amp and slap the output of the amp into the input.
I used my HX Stomps send and return set to instrument level for my captures, and comparing with others it has worked fine. I did add a cheap hum destroyer after the amps line out before going into tue Stomp return though, but since I found my main noise culprit (computer monitor) I might be able to remove it for my next go.

This time I did go through my pedalboard before amp with a Boss TU-3 so reamp signal got buffered along the way. But that shouldn’t make a big difference as for as I’ve understood it, or what do people think?

If you keep using your Stomp, there's zero need to add anything after its send, unless it's some kinda "unbuffer" circuit. But in case you're fine with how the amp sounds fed by the Stomp's loop, there's no need to to anything else.

Perhaps one should put a P-Split III between the Stomp and the amp?

So other than my Stomp, I don't need anything else, just patch cables and set up the inputs & outputs?

Thanks!!

Yeah. I'm not 100% sure about the exact routing within the Stomp (so you don't get any signal loops), but I may get it out later and have a look.

IO just found this video, @GuitarJon did using his Helix as a capturing box for ToneX. I'll try to play with this some this weekend, but if you get it figured out before then, let me know. Thanks!!

Didn't watch or test yet, but I think it'll be different with the Stomp anyway. You may need to use its outs to feed your amp as the sends likely won't appear as outs in the Tonex Modeler app. Shouldn't matter much, though, as you can set the Stomp to instrument level and balance its volume easily. You only need to create a patch that will not send the amps return (which you'd have to feed to one of the Stomp's inputs) through to the Stomp's output - but that's a piece of cake, juyt use a splitter as the very first thing and pan things accordingly.

Do you have a line out tap on your amp, a load box or how are you getting the signal post-amp? Or just capturing the preamp? Or micing up a cab?

I’m spoilt since my amp has a line out I can use.

Yes, the 2 amps I want to capture both have line outs
Nice! Then try it out! I routed it so that the dry guitar input for previewing is Input 5, which is always the dry input on the Stomp (can also be used when playing plugins, but according to a certain Sascha the latency is disastrous).

On the signal path I just put a Send block with -60db through so it mutes the regular outputs. Then when configuring Tonex for the capture the ins and outs can both be number 3/4 I believe. I don’t need to put the return on the signal path, but you can do that and place an IR so it’s not the raw signal you preview. All this is given that you use the send and return jacks and not the regular output jacks on the Stomp.

Good luck!

You you defenitly can use Loop from hx/stomp for reamping.

Once i measured a slight dB loss (between 1,0 and 2,0 dB) Bit you can easily boost Loop-send on Helix hw to taste.

I made some captures that way some time ago and it worked fine- at least for testing captures…

I put the send block at +6.0dB to goose it up after recommendations as well. Seems to have worked fine.
