IK Multimedia TONEX

Gotta say, these updates to training make it 100000000x more enticing to make models. It's been a while since I dived into making big batches of ToneX models, but these updates make it totally viable again. I had been asking for many of these features from the beginning and they're actually making a way bigger difference than I could have imagined. The process is so much more streamlined now.

The ability to do the capturing on my MacBook wherever and then transfer the files to my desktop PC to batch process over night should increase the number of captures I do from one or two here and there to a place where I could see myself making 15-20 captures on a rainy Saturday.

Makes sense!

My only hope was that he captured direct versions at the "same" time as doing these amp + cab versions for these packs, but I get that's still double the work.

I wonder if he did do that. It wasn't really possible in the past, but now with the shorter training files and batch processing, you could run a capture with the mic, quickly change Tonex settings and capture again from the DI without touching the amp settings.

Yeah same. And just the little things like being able to check with either a prerecorded DI, or play guitar, or monitor through different IR’s and add metadata while reamping is going on all add up.

Doing them one by one, and having to add data at the end really was a chore by comparison

I'm actually really impressed and happy with this update. The tones are good. Not NAM accurate, but definitely good enough. Doesn't shag your pick attack to death like the Kemper does, and doesn't sound lifeless anymore.
The pick attack on tonex V2 is solid over here. Also, I got a Kemper over for the evening (not my choice) and ended up making a couple of profiles and comparing with tonex V2, just for the hell of it. By comparison, the Kemper pick attack makes me ill in my tummy.

Then again, that was the case even before V2 tonex, so doesn't say too much.

In terms of NAM, it seems to me that's still the best, but the gap is smaller. It borderlines on "I practically don't care about it" at this point. I think IK multimedia did a solid job. They really stepped up on multiple fronts.

Were the new brown sound packs captured with V2 or...... 😬

I wouldn't be surprised if they were. If Amalgam and Jason had access to the beta for a while and were able to have a bunch of captures ready, I think it would make sense that the new packs from IK used it, especially the just released 80/81 and the yet to be released 82/84. The 78/79 might have been too old. I wonder if @IK Multimedia knows and can share.

Just got the amalgam email confirming free V2 caps when they’re available. I honestly might buy one of the new V2 sampler packs he put up just to support the effort in some small way. Dude has a huge library. At least he can do some batching now to take some of the pain out.

Given that we can batch these caps, I’m wondering if any of this is groundwork towards automating a larger workflow where you could capture a batch of caps in various knob positions - let’s say ten caps that progressively step the gain and treble up, and then IK builds a single dynamic model from that group of caps. Pipe dream.

That's a fucked up way to phrase it, but yes I agree.

I am using a Suhr RL-IR as the DI, but with the internal load bypassed and a real cab as the load the amp sees. P Split for the high Z reamp box.

So, could I use my Stomp XL as a AI and capture my Marshall SC20H using the direct out?

Just got the update installed.

I gonna try the Badlander for kicks and check out the new process and improvements. I was getting something like 15:30 minutes with a 3080 Ti. It would be interesting to see how much faster it is.

Using the AXE 3 for the IR/Cab and as Suhr Reactive Load from the Amps.

Same thing would go for the Kemper Mk II if I'm ever stupid enough to want to buy one of those, but damn, the Kemper is sorely getting outclassed in the accuracy department now, on multiple fronts.

Yo! Kemper HQ...

Had 2 occasions so far where the training signal just stops and I have to restart the reamp. Not sure what causes it so far.

Also it can be prone to clicks when going back from step 4 to step 3 (which is a common move when making a model with the last settings). Could be related to the Live Input state on stage 3.

I am not convinced they care. BUT...Tonex closing the accuracy/SQ gap with NAM definitely sets the bar a little higher for Proxy and others, and I wonder if this will spur an update to the QC capture quality. I have had very little time with a QC (not mine) and I thought its captures were overall very similar quality to earlier Tonex which was very good and better than Kemper at the time, but NAM has gotten better and Tonex has the huge advantage of cheap hardware. Hmmmm.
