IK Multimedia TONEX

Sure - so what's the latency on that thing when used as an audio interface? Most "thrown in for fun" interfaces perform pretty bad regarding latency.

With a Tonex One it is still under 2ms and you can monitor from the device while recording. With the larger Tonex, you have to put it in interface mode which means you don’t hear the guitar on the output unless it is the output device for the DAW and now your talking round trip. I would never do this.

Certainly not in audio-interface usage.

Note, to avoid confusion: I'm not talking "device latency" here. And IK's Axe IO, a dedicated audio interface, is far away from even getting close to 2ms RTL, so it's absolutely unlikely that the Tonex One would perform better. Besides, <2ms at 44.1 would only be possible at 32 samples buffersize and almost zero safety buffers. We're talking RTL numbers better than those of RME interfaces here.

and you can monitor from the device while recording.

Given the information in this thread, I thought you could not record a DI take while monitoring through the onboard sounds. Is that really possible?

Sorry, if you are talking about recording the DI track, on both the One* and the OG, you are stuck with round trip latency because the devices need to be input and outputs for the DAW with no wet through.

I was thinking more of a record some ideas on the road to then re-record later. In that case on the One, you can monitor the wet signal directly and also record the wet signal. I think the latency is slightly higher than just playing but only by a fraction of a ms.

* With the Tonex One, you can still monitor the dry through without going round trip, but not the wet. If you are OK monitoring the dry DI signal, you could record dry while monitoring with very little latency. I personally have a pretty hard time with this because the tone I hear influences my playing too much. YMMV. I do not believe there is any way to monitor anything local on the OG pedal, wet or dry.

Yeah well, that's pretty much what I thought it'd be like.

What I ideally wanted is to monitor the wet (processed by the unit) signal while recording only the dry signal. Alternatively, its audio interface could be as low as what I'm used to (and I'm pretty spoiled here by the Motu M2 which is delivering 3.5ms RTL), so I could skip the entire onboard processing when using it along with a DAW.
In fact, that'd be the perfect device for me. Use the onboard processing when, say, noodling along with some stuff coming from my smartphone or tablet and use it as a low latency interface when connected to my laptop.
Being able to at least track the DI while monitoring the processed signal would still be a "happy medium" or so.

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out here. I'm thinking of picking up a Tonex or Tonex 1 pedal and trying it. When it first came out I DL the free CS software, but the UI & search engine was such a PITA, I couldnt take it.

Thinking of diving back in but unsure of getting the full size or the 1. I can pick up a used full size locally for $250 and the 1 new for $200.

For my use, I run my Stomp XL in 4CM with my Marshall SC20H and would add it to the Loop in the Stomp to get some additional flexibility. I saw a guy use one live a few weeks ago and he told me how he was using it and he sounded great. Also, mainly going to use it for 80's hair band, metal, and Plexi tones for a few songs our band plays because I'm struggling to dial them in on my Stomp to my satisfaction. Any issues I should be aware of for this use?

If you were to do it again, given my intended use, is the full size pedal worth the extra cash or just go with the 1?

Any other suggestions, hints, tips, are greatly appreciated!

A few things to consider

1) do you like having a screen?
2) pedalboard space
3) do you trust the used owner to unregister it from their account so you can register it on yours and get full tone x software access

Im a screen guy and with a good used price, id probably go with the full size unit depending on your answers to the questions above

I haven’t spent time with Tonex One but bought the full size pedal at launch. It’s a well constructed, reliable (so far) device and I think the additional footswitches and presets add a lot of value.

I had the Tonex One for about a week before I returned it. At the time the software was horrendous and I hated the lack of controls on the thing. Trying to memorize colors and doing long button presses and all kinds of stuff...no thanks.

I would absolutely check out the full sized Tonex though because it at least has a screen and a decent amount of basic controls available. The software definitely seems better although for me it's still really buggy. But at least you can make changes to the unit and hear in real time.

The Tonex One to me only makes sense if you're just using one capture and not doing anything other than adjusting output volume. If it's set and forget in the loop of the Stomp, then it's probably cool. But if you're thinking of switching captures and especially thinking about MIDI, I'd go the full size unit.

Is that $200 USD for the Tonex one? Wasn’t it just on special for $150 USD?

I have both, I use the One far far more often then the larger OG Pedal. Since the release of the editor software late last year, it is much easier to use a laptop to build, audition, edit etc. presets on either device through USB. I would almost never use the on device controls for anything but minor tweaks.

Get the larger pedal if:
If you want to switch between more then 2, maybe 3 presets,
You want to control it with midi
You want to edit on device despite a limited screen and need to go through levels of menus.
You want to use it as an interface to record wet (mono) and dry simultaneously.

Get the One if you want:
The ability to play with backing tracks or other sounds over USB
If you want to save board space or bag space
You want something that is easily powered, 9v or USB including from a phone
You are using external effects or the internal effects will be “always on”
