For guitar stuff, I still just love Sennheiser HD-25s. Patches made with them also seem to be translating very well to my live FR monitoring.
They're not too comfortable, though, over-ear and closed.

I do expect that headphones matter so what do you guys think is the best pair to use for modelers or is it dependent on the model or it seems?? I use the old standby Sony’s and it seem to work pretty well

I’m not cork sniffing at all, I just went from one pair of headphones that sounded bad to me with my HX Stomp back in the day, and after researching and basically coming to the conclusion that I needed a pair with more ohms, I was stuck between Beyerdynamic or Sennheiser, and I went with my HD600s. I’m very happy with them, but I can’t speak for any other brands so I don’t. I don’t even remember the research I did or where I found that information, likely TOP. YMMV and you don’t need Sennheisers, but I’m happy with em.

I have moved away from over the ear headphones for guitar playing because I don’t like the physical size of them and there is too much compromise when picking an open back or closed back design.

Open back headphones sound glorious but they leak sound in both directions. That means you can hear the acoustic sound of the guitar along side the amplified tone unless you bump up the volume enough to drown it out. Playing at those volume levels all the time can cause long term hearing issues and it also bleeds out enough to bother my wife.

Closed back headphones solve the issue of isolation, but they tend to be over hyped in the low end and thus compromise the sound quality unless you get some seriously expensive cans. Many closed back headphones are less comfortable than open back because of the necessary clamping force to provide the isolation that they deliver.

IEMs are the best solution in my opinion; they are lightweight, comfortable for long playing sessions, provide superb isolation, and can sound very good. As a bonus, they are great for live monitoring at a gig. The downsides are cost, the small sound stage, and the fact that they aren’t as quick to put on / take off if you get custom molds ( which I highly recommend for optimal isolation and comfort).

Nah man, just being selective just like you would with a cab or speaker. $200-$300 for headphones is definitely on the cheap side!

But hey man if you found something cheaper that works for you… Great! I am curious what you use… I’m guessing maybe Sony MDR-7506’s? And I’m not trying to start a fight, pick on you or criticize your preferences at all!

Can I get a tldr what an optimal ohm rating is? I think mine are currently sitting in the 80s?

I’ve got A-T ATH-M50’s, and Sennheiser HD-380’s. Both sound quite good with Fractals and HX Stomp, as well as plugins. I had Sony 7506’s for less than a week, and gave them away. Hot garbage, IMO. I just can’t see how they’re so ubiquitous.

From what I remember it was anything above 250 ohms, and the HD600s are 300. I don’t have the money to splurge on different pairs of headphones to compare though so a huge grain of salt. The headphones I had were 47 ohms and I experienced a clipping/distorted sound a lot of the time which led me to look elsewhere. Later on I realized that some of the HX blocks had a headroom setting that was very important to not hear that clipping, so at the end of the day I might have been able to solve my problem by understanding my modeler better. I just don’t think about it anymore lol

Yeah I get some clipping as well from time to time. Maybe it's due to that. Maybe something to add to th Christmas list

I think it’s the midrange. Good for hearing voice in radio and film sets.
