Helix Talk

Least weekend I was working with my producer on a few songs I'll record in spring, and I was so pleased that he was open to using Helix instead of his amps (I expected him to be against that).

He created three base presets, for clean (Line6 clarity), crunch (brit 2203+scream 808) and distortion (revv gen red+scream 808) and then we applied those to each guitar part of every song.

All my guitar recordings sounded way better than in my demos, and I can't wait to record the definitive takes.

When I was coming back home, I felt so happy for having both my LT and Native. Definitely not missing having a physical amp (although I should get a fender fr sooner or later for rehearsals).

One thing I’m sorely missing in Helix these days is a good tube power amp emulation. Right now if you want to integrate an outboard guitar preamp you’re out of luck at achieving anything amp-like.

Me too! I am on a tube preamp GAS streak, and in addition to the preamps I had to buy a Two Notes Opus (for power amp modeling and IR loading). I am also waiting to get my AxiomEffects PAE-2, an analog power amp emulation.

For Marshall, what has worked for me so far is to use the Plexi Nrm with low gain, bass at 0, mids at 10 and treble at 7.5. Essentially I am trying to minimize the effect of the preamp gain and EQ, to get mostly the power amp characteristics, but I have no idea if I am doign things right. It sounds good, though.

A Mesa 2:90 or VHT power amp emulation would be all most of us need to close that loop.

There are too many amazing floor based preamps out there these days to not at least have SOME kind of support for those types of rigs. Right now I’m having to fallback to Tonex because Helix doesn’t have a solution.

If Helix supported NAM I’d just make my own capture.
Yeah. I agree. When i use a discrete preamp I have an Axiom Effects Power Amp Emulator. Get on the waiting list.

I’ve looked at these. It sort of fits the bill in that I could throw it after the preamp and not get hit with additional latency or conversion stages, but I’m trying to avoid adding additional hardware if at all possible. Adding the preamp alone feels kinda meh.

If I start collecting more tube preamps I might chase down the Axiom though. I still can’t tell to what capacity I’m migrating away from Helix these days.

Not at my unit at the moment but trying to recall if the Helix has a Fender Vibrolux Amp - or similar/identical alternative - in it ?

I've said it before, but if using Helix Native, automatic switching is definitely worth giving a shot. Depending on your style, it'll make recording a breeze. Almost too easy, zero regrets tho.

Nevermind - got home and checked and the answer is no.

10 mins of Googling revealed that there really is no other Fender Amp that sounds and feels much like a Vibrolux - nevermind.

Oh sorry, I actually searched for it but forgot to reply here xD

If it helps, with this your shouldn't need to be next to your device: https://helixhelp.com/models

You can search for keywords at the top. Vibrolux returns nothing.

FWIW sometimes the differences between the various Fender circuits aren’t as obvious in a recording situation. Between the Princeton, Deluxe, Super, or Bassman I really think you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Automating in post is fun too.

For instance, I have a solo part with a phaser that comes in and out and a harmonizer that pops in on the last lick.

I didn't originally plan it when I recorded it, but it really served the song
