For some reason (I can't find the video) I immediately thought of a skit I saw with an Irish comedian about explaining drinking at an Irish Wedding to an American doctor.

As I understand things, it used to be a religious holiday long ago and not an excuse for a knees-up until the celebrations and parades in the USA were seen in movies etc. to make it all shamrocks, leprechauns and guiness. Marches on St Patrick's Day were often part of The Troubles.
