Gotoh 1996T or Floyd 1000-7 in Ibanez RGA7420FM?

Those two both have the same footprint and the Gotoh is by far the better of the two But :
They will either not quite clear the recess route under the arm mech area of the baseplate or be very close. Also it may foul in the rout for the block. This isn’t a straightforward replacement. You will also need to use posts designed for the Gotoh/floyd knife edges because they are a different angle. The 1996/7 ones should fit in the existing bushes as long as they are still the same as the original 6 string version. I would say stick with the original trem because it is a lot of detailed work and cost for such a relatively cheap guitar. The Edge 2 is also not that bad. Why do you want to make the swap?

I was worried that the Edge 2 may be pot metal, but if its not, I'm fine leaving it in. Are new parts available for them if they break?

It is similar in materials to the edge. The baseplate main body is zinc and the saddles are hardened steel. Knife edges are steel inserts and don’t cause issues. For a budget trem it is pretty solid and generally works. Broken parts are rare but available from Ibanez.

I put a 1996t in my '94 RG470. Had to have a slight bit of the base plate ground away (almost broke the grinder - tough stuff those GOTOHs) and it's arguably the best trem I've ever had.

Yes but you replaced the Takeuchi bridge and that is a different footprint again. The same part of the baseplate is at main fault though.

Yep, 1996’s are direct drop-in’s for Lo-TRS. I really wish they’d just use the Edge, Lo Pro or TRS trems. So many guitars they’ve put out in the last 20 years I won’t touch due to the bridge.

I've been buying a lot of router templates lately, so I think maybe a gotoh route is doable and I want to get better at the routing anyway.

Also, found out that Potvin Guitars will make custom templates for pretty much what I'd pay for a template anyway!
