Fractal Talk

Yeah that's where my head's at and why I picked up an FM9. I inevitably always come back to Fractal gear. I can dabble in whatever else but I like to keep everything self contained and Fractal tends to have the best overall effects, amps, features, etc.

I had snagged an Axe 3 before the FM3 was announced and enjoyed that despite the form factor. Moved to the FM3 for a while but came back to Axe 3 after downsizing a lot of stuff. Now jumping over to FM9 it feels much less like a compromise than the FM3 which did sacrifice a lot of power, switching, and some functionality. I think the only thing I'm really giving up is the ability to shoot IR's and tone match which I never really use.

I'm a pretty simple person...I generally run all my effects in series and have a single amp and cab. I tend to like one good IR mix for everything. FM9 to me seems like it's more than enough and the form factor is really nice.

I've been looking at new Macs now so I think I'll list my Axe 3 and FC-12 for sale to raise some money for one. Maybe ditch the Fender TMP too...we'll see. Makes more sense than racking up more debt.
Just looking over the blocks guide for the FM9.... the only limitation that I would give a shit about is having 2 delay blocks versus 4 on the Axe3.... other than that... couldn't give a shit about not having the RTA or vocoder blocks!

I only upgraded to an Axe III / rack because of my room layout and keeping the I/O connections off the floor. I'm using the software editor only for the most part. Otherwise, the FM9 was great for my needs as far as horsepower and sound.

I'm at the point where I'm thinking Fractal only for hardware-based and then plug-ins for when I want to try something else. I kinda wish the Neural stuff was a little easier to mix/match in plug-ins or they would add the capture features.

I would not import 100 IRs into anything, let alone 1000.

Did you finish that beauty... or are things going VERY well at work these days...

Little extra to spend?

Hahaha while a large part of me is eye rolling at that amount of money, the other part of me is like “Fuckin’ a right Gilmour’s Strat is the most expensive guitar on the planet….again” :rofl

Is something off with the Fractal Klon? Any fans of it?

I noticed the Fullerton plugin Klon behaving very weird (ripply frequency response) so I thought I'd dive deeper.

I have a J Rockett Archer and a DIY Klon with the original diodes. Both measure very close, and the Helix model also measures just as similarly (all at comparable settings).

The Fractal one can't really match these ones at any settings (and the behaviour of the AxeFX Klon doesn't seem broken in the way the Fullerton ones does). For the nerds

FWIW, this is what Fullerton looks like:

Pretty sure there’s a delay compensation error in the Fullerton Klon when it’s blending the overdriven sound with the clean sound in the circuit. It’s fine with drive maxed (and matches the axe fx) but when you lower it it gets comb filtery.

It's not really a "bug". The bright cap is fixed at 220pF and not adjustable in that model. You'll notice that adjusting the Bright Cap parameter has no effect.

I can look into making it adjustable.

Thank you.
So it will be just the normal 1Meg pot without the fixed 330k divider resistor and fixed bright cap?
I think when people use the Normal channel for Bryan May tone for example they expect the standard Normal channel of the old 60s JMI amps not the Treble version of the Normal channel like Vox did in their pre-2026 Handwired amps.

Does James Freeman work for Fractal now 🤔
