I’ve also been late to check out the JVM stuff. I know I recently dug one of the ToneX JVM caps from the Satch vault, but in Fractal land the IIC++ is my go-to for high gain 100% of the time and then I figure out what I’ll compliment it with, which is almost always a 5150 or boosted JCM800.
It’s been a while since I’ve done any scooped chugga metal, I’ve had my head up Plexi/Marshall ass for months now, to the point I’m reconsidering my next amp purchase from being a Mesa Mark to a Ceriatone King Kong because I’m not feeling quite as modern chuggy as used to.
The problem with the real amp IMO is that it is really noisy but so is a 5150
The red modes also have to much gain and can get fizzy but the Orange od1/2 are great
My recollection of the zeitgeist back then was that you should get a Recto, a Mark, a Splawn or other boutique offering, or a boosted jcm. The JVM seemed to have leprosy for reasons I don’t really remember. Seemed like you could hardly give one away at one point in time.
IMO; the Fractal JVM is better than the real thing. He said, with love. I had it but that loop implementation and level problems I had with it were deal breakers. If they did a revamp and addressed those things; I would be day 1 buyer.
