Fractal Talk

Watching this comparison vid and noticed something in the 6505 section. Around 11:04-ish there seems to be some sort of low end happening compared to the others. Is that correct?

Man, I'm not even busting the QC's balls because it's the QC (and it's NDSP that I don't like) but that's a perfect example, those two tones back to back, that sound like the difference between an average amp sim and a Fractal model. While I've never shot the amp out directly comparing it to any modeler, it's an amp I've owned and spent a lot of time with live and in the studio, that low end is absolutely correct and is the source of all the balls with that amp. The usable balls, anyway. And that spot at 11:12 where he sustains the open chord, that's the 6505 growl.

Boosting it does play around with that, I'm assuming he's boosting them there as that's tighter than a regular ole 6505, but I wonder where the boost is coming from, an actual pedal or models from the respective units?

Alls i can say I never watch or listen to these comparisons, I don't care what the other modelers sound like as long as I can get the tones I need with my fractal, then that's all that counts, has not let me down so far.

Sound comparisons don’t mean nearly as much as they did fifteen years ago. It’s all the other features that separate the different units that people who are actually in the market are looking at. β€œCan this do what I need it to?”

Exactly, so what do I need it to do? And does it check the boxes?

Tried a pile of pedals with the fm9 this week. Added a second EV2, which leads me towards making a little larger board rig for the fm9. Theres certain to be some extra space so I decided to see if anything is really fun into the fm9.

Lots of pedals I liked into it, but I was surprised how often I decided the ITB stuff made more sense because of how it could change from scene to scene. That was particularly true with the ODs and fuzz boxes.

The POG2 and mxr poly octave just don’t add anything really that I can’t do with the quad or dual chromatic pitch blocks.

One pedal did rise to the top though, and I shouldn’t be surprised - the Ventris. Damn that thing sounds so, so good. It’s the last pedal that I expected to add much since the reverbs in the fractal sound so good. There’s just something a little magical about how the Ventris plays in front of a crunchy amp sound though and I’ve missed my reverb in front of the amp and drive pedal sounds. So, it is now sitting in front of the FM9 for me to see how it goes for a bit before I commit to a board build.

The things I’m loving about it: the big spring tank sound I cloned from a surfy bear, the lofi and offspring algos, and the way the hall-l algo works in front of gain.

I could probably cop the spring and hall sounds in the fm9 if I took the time, but why bother I have them dialed in with the Ventris and I have the room.

Same so far. I have some drive pedals I'm keeping because I've made them, it's just fun to have a couple of real fuzz pedals, and because there's no BD-2 in Fractal (yet?), but the current drive models (idk what they were like before the update) are excellent. I could happily do everything ITB.

I do want to experiment with some drive pedals in the loop though. I have a DIY RAT I am keeping, and it would be cool to be able to move it around in a patch, especially to put it after mod FX. I never liked the results of trying this with Helix though.

Follow up on this. I made this with the Multi-Delay set right to his settings and it’s an amazingly badass reverb. No clue how much is sounds like the Nocturne pedal, but its absolutely killer regardless.

I’m going to go back sometime this week and recreate it with standard single delays and see how they sound with different delay types. (Tape, Digital, Analog etc)

Stuff like this is where Fractal kicks all sorts of ass.

Cliff still working on that pesky pitch block
Hopefully this will help those struggling w warble

It sounds like Cliff is not done yet with the pitchblock . . .
