Fractal Talk

In light of the recent synth patch talk here, it would be really cool to see Fractal add a polyphonic "synth" effect like what was added in today's Fender Tone Master Pro update or the Boss HRM stuff found on their SY and older GP series. The idea being that instead of detecting pitch* and having an oscillator follow that, it's directly shaping the sound source (i.e. guitar) into a synth-like sound, meaning that latency is very low (and presumably this is much less resource-intensive too).

*I believe the post-GP generations of Boss's work here does do some sort of polyphonic pitch detection in order to separate notes for polyphony without relying on a hexaphonic pickup. Fender is presumably taking a similar approach.

Yeah as I mentioned in the other thread, mooer ge-300, eventide h90, all the boss sy pedals, ehx synth pedals and now TMP etc.. We're hitting the age where polyphonic without hex pickup should be no excuse anymore in anything coming out. The power and evidence is already here for it.

The thing I'd like to see though is more versions of it. Give us granular synth, wave synthesis, fm synthesis, vector synthesis etc.. However those kind of powers may be still long off!

Yeah, I think the key is really the approach. The Boss / Fender approach to it gets over a lot of the issues that come with actually tracking pitch and then using that to control synth voices. It does end up limited in other ways, but I think the result is "good enough" for a lot of guitar synth purposes.

Hey guys - new to the Fractal fam via the AM4. I'm loving what I'm getting out of the amps and most of the effects I've tried. One struggle that's kind of a bummer is I'm not finding anything that does a good modern space echo effect. For reference, my current top digital models are the Helix Cosmos Echo and the Roland RE-202 pedal. I'll eventually dig into the deep settings but was curious if anyone has suggestions to start. There's a lot of breadth to the Fractalverse and I'm drinking from the fire hydrant right now. :rofl:bag

Did you try:

Mono Tape Delay (most authentic tape delay IIRC)
Dual Head Tape Delay
Stereo Tape Delay
Worn Tape (personal favorite)

Yeah I gave those a shot last night but wasn’t getting what I was looking for. From what I’ve researched this morning Cliff has recommended the Mono Tape Delay with judicious use of the delay compander as the best option to reproduce modern space echo pedals. I’ll give that another shot later tonight along with whatever other info I sponge up today.

Well, if you have made progress, keep us posted! Always good info to have.

Cosmos echo, vintage digital, and crisscross were my faves in HX land.

I’ve rolled my own in fractal using the eq and compander to find exactly what I want for various things. The compander can be a big key in finding what you are looking for.

As starting points I use the memory man’s, tapes, and dual delay. If you like the modulated tapes, search around for the trick of putting an lfo on the motor speed.

Ok yeah we might be looking for similar things. Thanks for the heads up and context. I’ll keep this in mind on my next go round.

UPDATED RIG: Ok got some expression pedals connected. 1 for boss vg-800, 1 for boss gm-800, 1 for empress effects zoia and 2 for fractal axe-fx 3. Still need 2 more for AM4 and VP4, but I have no idea where to put them now lol. I do have 2 boss fs-5u switches I may use in them too.

Also secured 2 rack mount metal things on the top of Axe-fx 3 and secured a piece of super hard long foam behind the AM4 and VP4 to prop them up to see better and edit from the hardware when needed.

not to be too harsh (I don't mean it that way), but... after going away from guitar for a while, fully going into synths, and then coming back to guitar, it's pretty apparent how many (online) guitarists are really obsessed with finding ways to enjoy their gear and setups less or make them less fun to use. I don't get it at all.

Cue the Wishlist Threads, too, on products that haven't even arrived. :brick

I don't think you could be harsh enough.

What seems to be missing?

What space echo sounds are you trying to copy?
