Fractal Talk

At some point I need to sit down and school myself on synth-related stuff. I have a basic grasp on LFO’s, ADSR’s and whatnot, but to be able to open that synth block and get what I want out of it rather than randomly turning knobs to see what happens will take some edumacation.
Check out the app Syntorial.

Although I got sidetracked eventually, I found it a great learning tool.

Man, I was working on my EJ preset last night and have gone back and forth on a Twin and a Vibrolux for the clean tone, that fucking Vibrolux model is BADASS!!!!! I was using the Twin DynaCab w/ the ribbon mic and the low end from that amp was pretty nuts, that’s easily the closest I’ve felt to playing a tube amp as a result of the low end whack and I’d imagine someone walking into the room would assume it were an amp and not studio monitors. Probably not something able to be heard with smaller monitors, but man, I got lost on that model for a good hour.

Also the ODS Clean + Tube Screamer, as cliched as that setup likely is in a fair amount of modelers, it sounds fucking GREAT with a Strat.

That ODS clean amp is this shit. I use that thing for virtually everything from clean to crunch into a combo Dyna-Cab of the 412 greenbacks and the 412 ev12l. I have the master pretty cranked (like between 7-9?).

The ODS HRM model takes over from there with the same cab and does a surprisingly good high gain tone that covers both lead and rhythm duties pretty well.

I don’t mean blues lawyer stuff, this amp will straight up do rock and has a feel and dynamics to it that few others do.

The Fractal spring reverbs are great, but sometimes I want "bad" spring reverbs too haha. But yeah, Belton Brick reverbs really have their own sound, especially when pushed (ETA: and especially ones that self-oscillate). You can only kind of get there with the spring reverbs by lowering the drip etc, though maybe there's a way to get even closer with that approach!

The IR player can use convolution reverbs? I think up to a second or something? Perhaps mixing one or two since you can do two IR player blocks with the other stuff already in fractal land and get something closer?

I could be wrong on this info so don't yell at me lol

Together with Shiva Clean, the ODS Clean has the most dynamic transients of the bunch. They are a challenge when matching levels across scenes and presets..

That’s probably why it is my favorite, it has a tone of dynamic range but somehow still feels really good under the fingers. I’ve never played a real amp that walked that line so well, not surprisingly I’ve also never played a real dumble…

In the cab block too or just the IR player block?

From wiki

"You can also use it for room ambience because the IR Player supports FullRes IRs (Axe-Fx only). It also get used for room EQ correction."

"The IR Player block does not attempt to normalize the volume as it is a generic convolution player and doesn't know whether the IR is a cabinet IR or some other type of IR (i.e., reverb, violin, etc.)."

"A MIX control is also provided, so the block can be used as a convolution reverb."

Thank you! I was just gonna say: looks like it requires FullRes IRs, which aren’t supported on the FM9. Thank you though!

Yes, only on the Axe-Fx. Because convolution reverb applications require FullRes IRs, and only the Axe-Fx supports those.

Practically it's does not matter much, since FullRes is limited to 1.37 seconds anyway.

True, but could be useful for some sound effects etc.. I do wish it had longer decay etc. I have tons of convolution reverbs I've collected too. Be cool if the next axe-fx IV whenever that arrives will support it truly with options and longer times etc. Convolution reverbs have been coming back lately and getting popular in devices like strymon and poly effects and others lately.
