Fractal Talk

Here is my FM9 setup right now. Using a Ghostfire hard case - really liking the simple setup. I just plop it down, take the lid off, and I'm ready to go.

Im using the OCD Duo+ for extra switches but so far I'm not really happy with it. I have to hit the switches a couple times to make it activate, but sometimes it works first try. I may take it out and add another expression pedal.

I like it…

I’ve been thinking about switching to something like this. That may be my next project.

Need a job and qualified? Some openings! https://www.fractalaudio.com/careers
I'm an EE at a defense contractor and I have been trying to get more experience in FW/embedded since it seems interesting. I should have started learning on my own! Seems like a dream job, especially since I'm a big fan of Fractal.

At the same time, any job listing with "looking for a rockstar" usually means they expect you to work 60+ hrs a week lol. Of course, I know nothing of Fractal work environment, but just something I've noticed on other job listings.

Yeah I don't get why he got mad about that. Here's the link to the direct quote from Fractal:

I don't see how you can interpret that as anything other than "Our next gen product is going to be so good that it will make competing products look like a Game Boy". The only vague part is how it's going to do that. Since it's Fractal, I expect they are going to have the most powerful modeler ever made - with a user interface that does not compete with HX Stadium. I'd love to be proven wrong, but IMO a workflow that does not compete with HX Stadium keeps Fractal in the "looks like a Game Boy" category. Processing power is not Fractal's current problem.

I think the complaints about bass stuff are 100% valid. Adding e.g 20W Marshall models to the Fractal unit makes fuck all difference when they could instead add more bass amp models that actually offer bassists something new rather than "sounds 99% the same as existing models" for guitarists.

Fractal gets very defensive in that thread with the "well just use something else", and that's what people are going to do if they don't want to improve those parts of their products. I'd never recommend Fractal to a bass player in its current state. Not because the existing bass stuff doesn't sound good, but because other products that are cheaper provide better options.

Im a bit late to the party. Has there been any updates or hints on what Fractal meant when they said "next-gen" products? They said that back in June so not sure if anything has leaked since then.

FM24???

Nah nothing new to report on, unfortunately.

Only potential thing, and it's a stretch, is that Cliff mentioned switching to Shopify for their store for one reason and then another being something pretty big that he can't say.

Could be anything 🤷

A separate virtual pedalboard hardware SKU doesn't have any benefits for me as a current FM9 owner, sadly.

And a key clue - to me - to what their future multifx hardware will look like to me is the response that they have to quality of life improvements on their current wishlist forum for their current hardware.

And that response is......utter silence.
I think you're missing the point that the VP4 interface is part of the response.

I don't have one but I do know that the blocks on the VP4 aren't cross compatible with the other units because they were changed to improve the user interaction and use.

Shopify does market selling locally and globally. Maybe Fractal is going to offer direct sales globally?

Maaaan, I was thinking of getting a 2nd FM9 but now I wanna wait for the next-gen stuff.

It still could be some ways out. A company can shoot themselves in the foot when they make statements.

Cliff saying the whole "game boy" gate quote drums up excitement but also may deter some customers who think a new gen is around the corner (when it could very well be a year off).

Matt was quick to come in and say the III will be the main focus for the foreseeable future.

But honestly, does one need 2 FM9s ,😂 if just enjoy the one FM9 and hang out for the new gen

My plan is to get a Stadium and run it together with my FM9. There are things in the Helix universe that I love, and also things from Fractal. Plus, both of them will fit in a duffle bag (I have a Milwaukee tool bag that can handle both the FM9 and an FC12, so I know the Stadium will easily fit as well).

That's sick!

If they do end up selling direct globally, I wonder how warranty repairs and returns would work. With the recent G66 price cut, the VP4 ended up costing me about 40-50€ more than if I could order direct from Fractal. Add shipping to that, and I can't imagine getting it much cheaper from the US. The more expensive products would probably be cheaper though.

Fractal's engineering core has been incredibly low turnover. The "newest" engineer that we work with through beta testing has been there maybe 5+ years now. I think that says a lot about their culture and work environment.
