Okay, riddle me this....

Guitar ----> RME UFXII Input 10 set to 'Instrument' mode. Minimum gain is 8dB.

That signal ----> Axe FX III via AES ----> Axe FX III Output 3 ----> RME UFXII Input 11 set to 'Instrument' mode. Minimum gain is 8dB.

Patch is just:

I have to apply 4dB of extra gain to the UFXII in order to get the same signal level as I'm sending out.

Everything panned centre in the DAW. Everything at unity gain in the Axe3 and DAW.

Do you have the OUT 3 knob cranked?

Why not keep the signal in the digital domain between AFX Out and RME Input 11?, using AES?

Because I'm testing whether the Axe3 is suitable as a reamp box, and I'm trying to ensure I get the right level out of it that I expect.
