Fractal Talk

Oh Cliff, let's not pretend it doesn't happen every update. I've seen you reply to people who mention an amp sounding much better saying nothing has changed.

Also, hate? I've probably funded multiple vacations of yours alone, weird way to express my hate

Excited to check this out when it comes to fm9. I was pumped to try the JVM when I got it after all that I’ve heard about that amp. It didn’t connect with me at all even though it sounded like something I would dig. Felt too smooth and not Marshally enough for what I wanted from it. Maybe it will be my speed now…

@PippPriss kindly did some reamps with his JVM that I'm just checking now. Firstly these "typical" kind of settings:

which sounds like:

and if I set the AxeFX like this:

it sounds like: https://samply.app/p/mHwEZgAYnlMNZJCkToyu

and with some DI's from me, the real amp sounds like: https://samply.app/p/2Pc1BcKx5brdGzn6ZuSF

After that, I asked if Phil can reamp with the treble at 10, so we get this tone:

Which sounds like this on AxeFX with the below settings: https://samply.app/p/9JGRyVirBPqTMwwPCXqK

I would say they sound impressively close, and need less extreme EQ than before to match. But the AxeFX is still a good bit darker, for whatever reason (could well be tolerances/valves/voltages/Phil's particular amp etc).

what load was used when capturing the real JVM? does selecting an appropriate SIC in the Axe close the gap at all (not that the gap is huge, i’m just curious).

It was a React IR used here (which I actually find a fraction darker than real cab loads. I tried several SIC's in Fractal, all with speaker controls turned to zero where appropriate. I also set the preamp filter to 40k to open the tone up a bit. With the Rectifier I find I need to do some similar tweaks (preamp filter, MV cap, SIC HF rest cranked) to match the top end, if I don't want to dime settings as much.

I often find the AxeFX a bit darker than real amps I've compared against, for whatever reason. Those tweaks help in my instance but h8r's would say I'm doing something wrong.

For sure more cut/top-end with the amp. Model sounds good too tho.

All this JVM riffage might make me pry my ass off the couch and go play too. :ROFLMAO:

Can't wait to try these new amps. Those clips sound way better than what I remember from them before!

Well shit. That sounds close enough to my ears.

Edit: Fuck you Apple and your shitty fucking auto-correct!

Just for context, I'd like to add that some differences can come in due to recent preamp tube rolling. I placed a Ruby 12AX7HG in the V3 position (the cathode follower before the tone-stack) and a 12AT7HG Ruby in the PI Driver. In my 2018 model, originally there were "Marshall" branded ECC83 in there, I do believe that V1 was a rebranded JJ, followed by rebranded Shuguang in V2 and V3, just to close off again with yet again rebranded JJ ECC83 for both FX loop Buffering and PI Driver.
The changes introduced with the Ruby tubes smoothens out the low end a bit and overall makes sure that the bass and lower mids aren't that flubby, wild and untamed, which perhaps, together with pot tolerances reaching up to 20 percent, make up for the tonal differences between the real amp and the Axe-FX. Overall the Axe-FX comes incredibly close to the real amp, and has really impressed me of the Axe-FXs accuracy to replicate amplifiers. Makes me want one... 🙃
