Fractal Talk

That is what I was thinking but @iaresee suggested over on fractal forum...

"
You should be able to use IN2 and OUT2 as SPDIF sources on the FM9 allowing you to keep it all digital.

In the I/O setup menu on the FM9 under the Audio tab:

  • Set the Digital Input Source to SPDIF
  • Set the SPDIF Output Source to Output 2
  • Set the Input 2 Source to Digital

That should allow you to do a full SPDIF loop from FM9 <> VP4 and back."

But now I wonder about this clock source issue?

The device on the receiving end of the SP/DIF needs an external world clock source. If you have the FM9 set to receive the SP/DIF signal from the VP4 it will also want a clock source from the VP4. Similarly, the VP4 will want to see a clock source from the FM9 since it is receiving a digital signal on the SP/DIF input. That is where the issue lies. Neither device can provide the clock source while set to receive an external SP/DIF signal.

Ok then I'll try the original way I was thinking "If i go spdif from fm9 to spdif on vp4, then take the outs from vp4 into the IN2 on fm9... That should work once i set the ins and outs right in each machines globals."

I velcro'd my expression pedal to the side of my fc-6 :D So it's easier to move around with it lol.

However I wish I would have gotten a expression pedal that didn't have the trs cable attached, so that I could use a shorter one into fc-6 instead, but am not sure how that works yet.

If I use expression pedal in the pedal 1 input on fc-6, does that override the PDL1 input on fm9 or does that mean someone could have 7 expression pedals going at once? Four in the fc-6 and 3 in fm9? Geez if that is the case lol.

I ordered another nektar exp controller! Going to put it on the right side! 2 exp controllers is enough!

I'll probably do the same to the other side lol. 2 is enough!

It does not override the pedal inputs on the FM9. The pedal inputs on the FC act as additional expression pedal inputs, so you could have seven expression pedals connected at the same time if you wanted to.

Man I am having so much fun with fractal! Learning about modifiers and stuff right now. Still not sure what external 1 - 16 means yet, or manual 1 - 5. Will have to break out the manual to figure those out.

It's fun trying to set a delay to come on when you attack a little harder then usual using the envelope follower etc. :D

Because the Fractal units have so many manuals, one for the modeler, one for the blocks guide, one for the FC, one for the FC footswitches, and one for the tonematch function, I just took all of them and combined them to a single pdf that I could search so I didn't have to remember where to search for a particular keyword; it's helped a lot!

Not sure if you have seen this before 🤷🏻
Thought I’d put it out there.

Hey all,

I've mentioned this in passing I think, but wanted to bring it up again. I really prefer my reverb BEFORE my amp because it really captures that classic P&W sound with the reverb distorting from the amp. I LOVE this with my clean tones, and with my Fractal I couldn't be happier.

However, I haven't quite found what I'm looking for in terms of higher gain sounds using this method. Which would be a clean-ish amp and an OD pedal giving me most of my gain. The high gain amps sound and feel amazing, and exactly what I'm looking for, but I can't have my reverb before my amp if the amp is a high gain amp. So I need to stick with my clean amp with reverb before it, and get my high gain sound with an OD pedal out in front.

TLDR: What are your best mid to high gain and screamin' lead sounds with an OD pedal into clean-ish amp in the Fractal?

Put the reverb after the high gain amp in a parallel row and followed by a drive block (or the 2nd amp block if it's unused) to obtain the distortion you want on the reverb only.

fm9 turbo mk2, fc-6 mk1 :D

I'm not sure how to combine them but that would be nice to do

No problem! The easiest way is to to use an online pdf merge site; there are plenty of free ones out there, and if you're merging pdfs you don't mind others seeing, those would be fine. I like to use jPDF Tweak:

because this is freeware, you can download it to a PC, and if you're merging stuff like tax documents or something you shouldn't upload to a web app, it's great. Plus, it does have several other pdf functions. For this I combined the manuals in this order: FM9 Manual, Blocks Guide, FC6 Manual, and Footswitch Functions Guide. I kept the bookmarks from the original pdfs, but added title ones to indicate where each manual starts. Enjoy!

Thank you so much! I'm in bed on the kindle right now. So I'll grab this tomorrow when I get on the computer 😁
