Fractal Talk

After my complicated on-and-off relationship with the Fractal Audio FM3 and FM9, I had made a commitment at the beginning of this year to not buy another FM3.

I am proud to report that I have not broken my resolution!

I had the real 20w head for a minute. Great amp at a very good (US) price for a marshall with I believe EL34#
Yeah, they're EL34's.

I find it absolutely odd as hell, but the JCM800 Studio (20w) has replaced the 2203 for me. It sounds incredible.
I find that kind of thing happening semi-regularly when running things direct with IRs. I really like the Blues Jr models when running direct. And then when I hook up an actual cab and that model is an IMMEDIATE turnoff to me and I remember how much I dislike that amp IRL.

I think I had a similar thing happen with the SV20 where I loaded it one day to check out and dug it more than what I had going on with my normal Plexi preset. I’m not sure I’ve checked out the 800 yet!

Revisited the Legacy last night (GOT Steve Vai Preset) and it finally clicked for me. Played for hours. It’s a very pleasing amp to play, especially for leads.
That amp is such a great one for leads! It spoils you because it is SO damn easy to play. The exact opposite of a Plexi/800. The legato flows so easily out of it, no wonder Cliff decided to call it that.

Hahaha a couple years ago over on Jemsite someone asked if the AxeFX does the Legacy well and as usual, someone had to chime in and talk about esoteric bullshit about tubes and how it can’t. I figured by posting this it would put any speculation to bed-

But no, esoteric tube guy, after claiming how modeling can’t pick up on intricacies of tone and homogenization and blah blah blah, says that it only sounds like a Legacy in that clip because of my fingers. While I’m always on the “tone is in the fingers” side, I draw the line at fingers being able to recreate specific amps, never mind the whole fact that if a modeler is that efficient it can detect differences in my fingers to change a tone, there can’t be a whole lot of homogenization going on!

That sounds fantastic! If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought that was Steve. Do you still have the preset you used on this or have you updated it since all of the updates?
