Fractal ICONS Plugin

This is a surprise. I was under the impression that Fractal wasn't keen to go there. I think it will be a big success for them.

I hope when Line 6 gets to porting Stadium to the plugin world they stick with their Native model and give you the whole kitchen sink at once. Maybe Fractal will go there eventually. I don't have a ton of use for plugins, but I'd probably be a buyer if they put everything into a single plugin and priced it similar to Native.

About the price thing that some people keep being sour about or downplaying it over other brands...

Take into consideration that Fractal Audio has less employees and they need paid obviously for their skills and time etc. It's a lot of work to bring happiness to people when you don't have a huge arsenal of employees compared to a bigger company that can afford to do it faster and perhaps less accuracy in some brands and that allows them to be able to release things at a lower price probably.

However with Fractal, you're getting the fractal sound and feel and accuracy that is well known and loved. You can't put a price on happiness right or so they say? ;)

One thing I know for sure is that they work their asses off daily to bring this stuff to you and more!

I’m waiting for someone to tell us they’re using their AxeFX as an audio interface and MIDI controller for the plugs

It might become common to use an AxeFX for recording, but when you want to reamp, insert a plugin instead of reamping back through the AxeFX.

The more you try to explain it, the dumber it sounds.

It's a plugin. It costs what it costs. If you want it at that price (plenty of people will) buy it. If you don't -- don't. Nobody is a rational consumer in this area. See, e.g., dude that owns a III, FM9, FM3 and AM4 trying to have rational dialog re: pricing.

Are you calling me dumb?

who in this thread is sour over the price?

Screwed around with it for about an hour.

Good
  • Clean layout
  • Amp view is nice with the authentic styled knobs. Advanced controls not too far, but neatly tucked away. All the advanced stuff looks there, which is going to be nice when Marshall Madness arrives.
  • Extra mic options are nice, and the cab block is really awesome in general. (I always forget about the room and preamp controls tucked in advance params)
  • Nice selection of modulation effects. All the stuff you’d normally want.
  • All you can eat buffet of Fender, which is fun to mess with because I’m normally a “throw a dart” Fender user, so it’s fun to go on a deep dive.
Room to grow
  • I was getting some consistent crashes cycling through artist presets. No issues when creating presets or after a preset was loaded, but they were pretty consistently overloading when actively cycling through them to demo. Nothing fatal requiring a project closure or anything. I could click out and then retrigger. Luckily it runs really smooth once you’ve landed on or started a preset.
  • A couple times I got hung in a list window and couldn’t click out and had to use one of the tab headers to break free.
Content
  • Reverb and Delays. By FAS standards it’s light on both and leaves you reaching. A basic digital and analog delay can work, but it needs a friggin tape, and for you to forget there are 78 awesome delays in hardware. lol FAS is King Kong of reverbs and a spring/studio and hall feels lacking relative to their own catalog of epic reverbs. It really needs at least one ethereal verb imo. On the plus side I really like that studio very. So clean and classy.
  • Cabs, would be nice if they synchronized their cabs across all bundles, which would add some 412’s here. I often keep a 412 loaded when doing cleans to keep things consistent with riffy stuff in songs, and not be too jarring going from a 112 to 412 etc. Would be useful for this cab block to stay synched with other future bundles.

Plugin FASholes, we have arrived.

I can't help thinking this will complicate the update process. It used to be when a new amp feature was added to the AxeFX, it then followed on the FM3. Now it has to rolled out to the FM3, FM9, AM4, and the plugins.

They've been doing fine with all of the others. Plugin isn't going to add much more time I'm sure.

It's now far more platforms for the AxeFX changes to be ported to than it used to be with just the FM3, especially since the plugins add new wrinkles of many new OS/hardware/DAW/format configurations that have to be tested.

I'm sure they can manage, but this makes the roll out of updates to the various platforms an order of magnitude more complicated than it used to be.
