Fractal ICONS Plugin

No doubt others gel well with it, and get great tones. I just don't care for what I've gotten out of it, and it's just nowhere near Fractal for me.
Holy fuck balls, Nolly is LEGIT. I am absolutely loving it. Stock cabs, awesome. Loading my own IR's, awesome. Amps......all awesome. HIGHLY recommend. I did NOT like the SLO last year when I tried it, and the Morgan suite was just okay. But the Nolly is fucking great!!! Welll worth the half price, and actually I'd have happily paid full price.
Was that sarcasm? 😂

I don't know about "Most" :giggle:. The single plugin model, like Amplltube, where all your purchased content appears in one plugin is popular because of its flexibility, but the NDSP multi-plugin approach has been wildly successful. One reason for that success IMHO is the narrow focus of each plugin. People like calling up a plugin that is curated for a specific genre.

Well to be fair, part of that success is the fact that NDSP plugins sound very good, and Amplitube still sounds like 2010.

They also had the combination of attaching artist names directly to their Archetype plugins, as well as a very effective overall marketing approach that aimed towards the younger generation of players and more modern music and stylistic trends. And I imagine a good part of "people like plugins for a specific genre" is beginner guitarists being given instant entry into sounding like their favorite artists. The flashy visuals and simplified approach definitely helped of course, but I'm not sure we can say it's just "genre based" in the same way, as if that alone was the reason for their success.

Ok, but whether "genre" is the right term to describe how the NDSP plugins are segregated isn't really relevant to the point.

Isn't the point whether narrow-focused plugins are preferred over "suites"? I was giving context to the success of NDSP's narrow-focused ones, and how there were other factors to that success. I don't see how that isn't relevant...

The point is there are pros and cons to the two approaches. IMHO part of the success of the NDSP plugins is because they chose the focused approach. Whether or not "genre" is the right term to describe how the NDSP plugins are segregated has fuck all to do with that point.

That's one way to do it and it has obvious advantages.

But...the successful model everyone in the biz is admiring is NDSP, and that's not how they do it.
Ya and it makes no sense. If you want an effect from one archetype you end up chaining multiple plugins in serial which causes extra CPU load, latency, and you can’t create a unified preset for that sound in one place. There’s no upside to it vs one container. You still have to buy what you want to use either way.

The ironic thing is that on the QC you can mix and match any part you want from any plugin but it’s going take them 8 more years to finish putting them there.

I don’t think their success is due to the focused approach. Most of their market is highschool kids and guys in their early 20’s. The success is that the price is accessible to them (they run 50% off sales yearly), they have nice graphics similar to video games, and they target genres and artists that are more known to that demographic…they market the absolute shit out of them.

Sorry to hear that - I think Nolly is the best 5150 sim I’ve come across (why did you buy it if you hate 5150s that’s the bread and butter?!?)

Because my friend told me that’s what I’d like. 🤣
It seemed to work fine with one York pack, but then terribly with another, which is just weird. I dunno.

Yep, that's basically what I just said above. Good point about the video game aesthetic and bi-annual sales too. Makes me wonder if they inflate the standard prices based on the expected 50% sale price, so that technically the 50%-off price is the "real" price they work with.

I love using Nolly, but I've actually heard that Josh Middleton's STL Tonality is to date the most accurate 5150 BL plugin. But I know Nolly uses his secret special modded BL for his plugin.

I haven’t tried that one! I’ll try and see if they have a demo

I love the 5150 like a lot of people do, the TSE X50 plugin was my first paid for amp sim. Honestly as I’m aging it’s not my favorite amp, but it’s top 3 for sure (I just kind of lean towards the Mesa side of things)

One persons special modded amp is another persons fart box. At the end of the day the Middleton modelling and ndsp modelling is on par. Can make them both sound amazing or terrible if I tried, wouldn’t say one crushes the other

Yeah totally agreed. And they all have different flavors anyways, even when they're "accurate" individually.
