Fractal Audio Systems AM4 - Amp Modeler

I spent a little more time with my new AM4 last night. I still feel a bit like an ill-prepared tourist while navigating around the thing, but it's getting easier as I go. I still haven't started making my own presets yet, just navigated around a few more of the factory presets.

I'll get the Captain Obvious moment out of the way first. The amp modeling is, in general, as good as any I've played around with. 'Good' to me means that it's easy enough to get sounds that are enjoyable to play that lend an amount of inspiration. Most of the factory presets I messed with were relatively dry, so I'll still need to explore the effects options available in the architecture. I came of age between the mid-70s and mid-80s so somewhat greased up tones are embedded in my DNA. But the quality of the relatively dry tones is high enough that the AM4 will work for my needs. I'm using it to replace my trusty POD Express as a low footprint cabin-in-the-woods/over-the-summer rig. The POD express is a pretty good little device all things considered, but I'm pretty sure the AM4 will cause me to forget about it in short order.

The AM4 has a somewhat different feel to it compared to the new Helix Stadium modeling. I bounced back and forth between the two platforms a couple of different times yesterday. There's one I slightly prefer at this stage but I don't want to get into debate over platforms. In part that's because as I get more time on both platforms my preferences are apt to shift. It's also because both are way more than "good enough" for what I want out of them.. Nothing to do except stand by as each platform becomes More Realer with each update and be grateful that I have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to availability of cool tones. If it matters, I generally go for tones starting at not quite perfectly clean to what someone with modern high gain tastes would consider mid-gain, topping out at what I think of as slightly pushed crunch, so I haven't delved into the high gain options in either -verse deeply at all.

Anyone else notice that in the advanced parameters, when you change an amp it doesn't always automatically link to the correct cab in the dynacab section? It defaults to a 1x8 5F1 Tweed curve. Bug or user error?

I'm on 1.02 beta 2
This is not the Dyna-Cab, it is the speaker impedance curve. If you page right once from the Speaker Impedance screen, you will see that that correct Dyna-Cab has been loaded (4x12 RECTO STRAIGHT). If you manually change the Dyna-Cab to any other speaker and back, the correct impedance curve is selected. This is a bug and will be corrected in the next release.

In your preset-scrolling approach, make sure you also scroll through each scene in each preset -- the first scene to load is usually on the dry side with one or two other scenes being greasier.

Time stamped for the classy chugs :satan

Just bear in mind, there's only so many simultaneous blocks you can have.

There aren't any effects other than drive where you can have two simultaneously. Probably not a problem for most people.
They know what they’re doing, holding back the plex delay and pitch shift.
