Fractal Audio Systems AM4 - Amp Modeler

I'm extremely impressed at the short gap between the Axe III FW and the AM4 beta FW. When I moved from the Axe III to the FM series I wished for a closer gap between what the Axe III got and my unit. I totally get having to switch between architectures in both adapting code and going through a complete other set of QA testing, but sometimes I looked longingly at the cool stuff and direct attention from Cliff that the Axe III got.

With the AM4 it appears I've finally got the best of both worlds - a compact floor device with enough switches and blocks for all my live use, and fewer days where I will let my entitlement get the best of me.

Has anynody noticed that the DI level over USB is way too loud? So the dry guitar signal coming through USB... I really need to solve that issue!

EDIT: this issue was resolved with the new beta! yay!

Not sure if this helps but it is in new beta
New “USB 3/4 Record Source” option – Allows USB channels 3/4 to be set to NONE so the input DI signal is not sent to the computer. This option is provided specifically for use with software such as OBS and other streaming or recording applications that cannot select individual USB inputs and instead listen to all available USB channels, which could otherwise result in the DI signal being unintentionally blended with

Digital levels on Fractal gear can be a bit weird tbh. If I take a SPDIF signal from the Stadium and compare it to the level I get when I plug into the front of my RME UFXII's Hi-Z inputs, they're basically the same. But Fractal is always louder, I don't know why.

Love the new email cartoon I just got!

No relation…:sofa

Got on the waitlist...

I originally said that I would buy an amp modeller in the VP4 format in a heartbeat but the EU price turned it into a few million heartbeats instead.

But then I expected this to be Amp+Cab only, so I guess I am getting a lot more than originally assumed. I have had an FM3 before but did not get warm with it because of the form factor and the on-device UI. Let's see how my second attempt with Fractal goes.

Looking forward towards my Christmas present :cool:

Same here. And as a bonus this has quickly become my fave for bass

Is there an amp block you particularly like for bass?

I finally got around to trying the new 8x10 DynaCab last night and ended up re-making my main bass preset as a result. SVT 2, 8x10 Dynamic 2 and the 8x10 Ribbon, the Dynamic 2 is mostly covering top and bottom end while the Ribbon is mids/lows/warmth. I put new strings on my Spector before dialing it in and that preset sounded like a frickin piano in seconds, it was glorious.

I pretty much stick with the SVT 2 and the Porto and was mostly using the controls on the bass itself to tweak most of the tone, but now with that 8x10 DynaCab there’s a shitload of tonal options opened up.

This is getting silly I’m must be getting old.
Either the modeling is so much better than the one in the Ax2 or Ax8.

I mean I didn’t care for my big MkV and dig the lil one. But the Patrucchi 2c+ is just maddening cool.

Hmmm. I’m gonna live with this for a bit longer but I might just ditch my UA pedals and get an Axe3 or maybe wait for next gen.

Oh sometimes GAS feels just right.

Latency measurements

Using firmware v1.02 public beta 2

TL;DR

  • Empty chain => 1.33ms
  • Drive only
    • Esoteric RCB => 1.98ms
    • Two Esoteric RCBs in series => 2.63ms
  • Amp only (seems to depends on the amp)
    • Texas Lonestar Clean => 1.92ms
    • Plexi 100W Normal => 2.11ms
    • Deluxe Verb Normal => 1.88ms
  • Cab with unit impulse user IR => no extra latency as expected
  • Drive (Esoteric RCB) -> Amp (Texas Lonestar Clean) => 2.58ms
  • Drive (Esoteric RCB) -> Drive (Esoteric RCB) -> Amp (Texas Lonestar Clean) => 3.22ms

Legend
