FM3 versus IR X tones compared video

Are you gravitating towards one unit over the other? Or just enjoying having both?
The voicing of the IR X 2 channels is very different. 1 is open and raw plexi as you heard in the video and 2 (played with humbucker guitar) is more compressed and in your face which in my JEL 20w head is perfect for solos but not in the IR X. As a result i tried to use the plexi side boosted even more than how I am with crunch work and it's meh that way.

Bottom line the FM3 feels like a well worn pair or shoes if that makes sense? :rawk

I think so! Lol

I'm tempted to snag a FM3 and throw the irx in the loop

There’s no way to meaningfully compare them in a clip if they aren’t using the same IR. Cool to share a clip, we just can’t say that what we’re hearing has anything to do with the units, tubes, modeling, etc unless the same IR was used.

You can certainly go that route, this was meant to give a snap shot of what each sound like. I spent time with each unit to dial in a sound I would use then compared the tow as opposed to trying to get them exact. (y) I hate spending endless hour messing with IR's

I used to buy these packs that had hundreds in there and it was so exhausting to sample them all.

Never said anything about trying loads of IRs, take the one in your fm3 patch and drop it in the IRX. Now, you’re comparing the real difference in the feel and sounds of the units. Or don’t, but if you don’t there’s a decent chance you might think you like one unit over the other but it’s really just the IR and not the preamp/modeling.

I've used Fractal products since 2011 in addition to my amps so I'm well aware of the importance of the IR to the final tone, but good point and using the the FAS IR may have worked but I trust Dace's ears and opted to stick with his Greenback cab :beer

Despite any IR you like, the downside for me on the IR X is the voicing of ch 2 is compressed and so different than ch 1 tone I dialed in it was a deal killer for me. Most will just use ch 1 for clean tones and that's great.

You had your phone pointed, from what I coudl tell, mostly away from the speakers, and it was set at a very different angle for the IR-X vs the Fractal.

So.Much.Gain in all of these, though.

Cool video. I don’t have any opinions on any of the tones and iirc the IR X is designed to get you a tone faster, with less tweaking.

With current gen modelling, the feel and response is there, so the preamp tubes aren’t a big deal for me.

I’ve only tried the Friedman sound in the Helix and I didn’t mind it for some Megadeth riffs.

Good to know!

I get a kick out of this, Friedman IR-X and Fractal FM3 alongside HX Effects into Atomic CLR :D

If I'm hearing correctly, the IR-X sounded a little more punchy and warm, where the FM3 sounded more compressed and fizzy. Maybe that was a volume or camera positioning thing.

Also really dig your guitars, would be fun to see a tour of those!
