Fender FR-10/FR-12 noise reduction mod

Amazing though isn’t it?

We have a resident world-class acoustic expert on speaker design here posting, and yet all we get is “You’re doing it wrong.”

All push-back and no substance.

Says he spent 17 years explaining this stuff - yet it’s our fault we can’t grok the mighty Jay.

We are apparently with insufficient foundational knowledge to understand the GeniusBrain. 🧐

Why be so angry? Wore out? Tired? Why post if all you’re ever gonna do is tell everyone how stupid they are?

I know J can do better here. 🤙

Oh I'm not taking your position, or not taking it, I just thought that gif was PERFECT, at that juncture. :pee

You requested demanded data in direct support of my "doing it wrong" statement (it was more nuanced than that, BTW), and I provided it. Yet you still seem to want to make ad hominem attacks.

You're saying the data I provided in this thread isn't "substance?"

Direct personal attacks such as this are not going to engender friendlier interactions. But you already knew that....

Data isn’t really information Jay. It certainly isn’t any “solution” either.

You of all people should know that.

That's actually pretty flat by instrument "FRFR" standards  The low frequency bump is a mixture of the cabinet's own resonance and the EQ section, which is very Vox AC30-ish in the sense that bass gets exaggerated even with that control at neutral. Dialing it down to 3-4ish will flatten out the response up to 300Hz entirely.

The worst offender IMHO is the ~5dB dip at 2.8kHz, which is likely the crossover point for the tweeter - and can't be easily compensated for. From Fractal Forums:

For reference, here's the frequency response of the Yamaha HS8 and QSC K10.2, also courtesy of Fractal Forums:

Way different scales in the two graphs. The Fender is approximately +/- 10db, the monitors are +/- 3 db.

That's a huge difference for a log measure.

Again: that +10db bass hump is NOT the amp's pass-through frequency response - which would be terrible. It just happens that the EQ boosts low frequencies on "neutral" settings. This is clearly intended to mimic the behavior of well known guitar amp tone stacks.

Turning the bass knob down to 9 o'clock or so flattens it out.

Hmm, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure it's not that bad. How about fuzzydirtface?
Thank you for being kind. I wasn't offering serious commentary on my appearance. I was making a self deprecating joke. I like my face. Well, more importantly, my wife likes my face. :)

My intention was to add a little levity as the discussion was turning intense and contentious. IMHO we don't have to take ourselves so seriously. This is guitar gear, and for every best practice quoted, from whatever perspective, someone has come along and blown up the rules and been hailed as revolutionary.

One of the things that I've liked about this forum, as opposed to "the other place", is that people want to share thoughts, opinions and information while having fun, with a little good natured ribbing thrown in.

Perhaps Rodney King really did have it right - "Can't we all just get along?"

Yeah, i figured you were joking. So was I. :rofl
It's what we do around here. 95% fun - 5% serious :farley

Welcome to the forum. (y)
And yes I agree, life is too short to be overly sensitive and stressed out, especially when discussing music and gear.
Thank you for the welcome. I've been lurking here for a while, but don't often post because the interwebs often include verbal jabs and barbs that I don't want to deal with. I'm an older guy and learned this lesson in the early 1990s when Genie and Compuserve were the big places for people to congregate. And then when AOL came along, well that was revolutionary! I got into a couple of verbal "scuffles" back then and soon realized that I like peace and equanimity more than trying to "win" a battle of wits (or opinions) with strangers.

I've really enjoyed this thread because of the knowledge shared. And I admire @Lysander and his spirit of innovation. It's cool stuff. I currently use an EV PXM-12BT for my "FRFR". I used to have a CLR, but sold it because of the lack of service at Atomic. I've liked EV products and had excellent customer service from them in the past. I'm intrigued by the FR-12, but I have an SY-1000 and GM-800 in my rig, so I want a solution that does both guitar tones (I use a Fractal FM9) and synth tones. The EV works well for me for this use case.

But, if I have an extra $550 I might look into checking out an FR-12. I've been using some form of modeling since I bought a Line 6 Axsys 212 in 1996. I have owned a bunch of Line 6 gear (POD HD500, several iterations of POD beans, a 1x12 Flextone 2, a 2x12 Vetta Combo, Line 6 Helix). I switched from the Vetta to a Fractal AX2 in 2011. I gave the Helix a go after I had my AX2, but liked the AX2 more than the Helix. I've been a fractal customer ever since. The idea of getting something with more "Amp In the Room" is appealing. But for now, I'm buying guitars, so I don't have extra bucks for an FR-12.
