Dream Theater Megathread NEW SONG POSTED!!!!!

Thanks, SOTS! :beer

It's definitely not me dissing DT. Geesh! Their greatest fans take that crown. Repeatedly!

I had heard the FW song before, but never heard the similarities in that one riff to the iconic Pull Me Under
riff. Until I did. Now I can't unhear it.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's eerily similar and my hunch is not an accident. DT loved FW and
have cited them repeatedly as paving the way for bands like DT.

I have never taken a drug that allowed me the power to go back in time and put words and riffs and thoughts
in other people's heads, but I will keep trying.

Glad to know you had such good influences in your youth! Not surprised!:beer
Fun fact- DT caught some shit for Never Enough sounding like Muse's Hysteria, and subsequently, they made a comment during a video tour of the studio during a later recording session, that they don't listen to any other music in the lead-up to writing a new album. Don't know if the 2 events are connected, but still...

I dunno about them not listening to other stuff before recording a new album...

It's on Octavarium.

You do know me, right? :rofl

Hahahah I'm aware it's on Octavarium. My SFAM vid posting was to show that they have indeed listened to albums for inspiration leading up to the recording of an album. If I remember right that wasn't the only time Portnoy mentioned specific albums playing a role in a new album. I know he or Petrucci said they wrote "The Glass Prison" after seeing Pantera, but I'm pretty sure Portnoy used to talk about specific albums on his forum and I definitely remember people asking him about the "inspiration corner" after that SFAM vid.

Hahah I mean, they'd write "Metallica Section 4x" or "Marillion Sections 8x" on the dry erase boards when they were writing and then there's stuff like this-

Every time I'd make my dad listen to a DT song he'd end up digging out a Rush album to play me a part DT snagged for one of their tunes. It's more silly on the fan's side of things to give them shit for being influenced by Muse when they've done that stuff a ton over their career. But I also recall them getting shit for Jordan's "scratching" on "The Glass Prison" and how they were a nu-metal band now. :ROFLMAO:

Yesterday night they played in Pompei, here in Italy, where Pink Floyd recorded their Live at Pompei film/concert.

The played the entire 25 minutes echoes. 😲

Too bad I live 1000km from Pompei.

This is where I remember it from. Several albums later than the time frame you're referring to. Cued to where they discuss it.

FII is special to me, in that it was the one that got me into DT. Plus it has a vibe/sound unlike any others, and I love it. In my top 3 for sure.

I got in to DT with live at Marquee, a record my friend, drummer and band mate made me listen.

I still remember that day: we had rehearsal at my house (I had a nice dedicated room in the basement :love) and he told me "you have to listen this!" and played metropolis in car.

I was 😲.

Next rehearsals he came with a copy of his CD (which was already a copy). 😂

It was around 1993/94.

Images and words has been the first record I owned on CD (it was a gift from my band mates).

Falling into Infinity has been my first DT new record as a fan. You know, the new releases you wait for with anticipation, those records you buy, bring home and listen from start to finish without distractions.

I loved it immediately.

I've listened to Live ad Marquee this morning after a loooooong time and I've forgot how good that record is an what a great song is Another Hand/The Killing Hand sung by Labrie.

I know that parts of the vocals has been overdubbed in that record but, jesus chirst, labrie was a beast at the time.

I just saw they announced they will be playing A Change Of Seasons at their next US tour!!

This might be the first time I go see them in about 20 years.

The only problem is I’ll have to sit through them playing all of Parasomnia in order to hear it… they’re gonna make me earn it :rofl

I'd also go back to see them just to hear A Change of Seasons. Can't remember when I saw them last time exactly but it's probably after octavarium.
I hope they'll keep it in the set list when they'll be back in Europe next time.

Oh I hope not! That song is about as disjointed to me as you think TSMI is! :rofl

Fortunately, since I saw them for DT40, once PS is played, I can leave!! You cannot. :rofl(You could arrive late though. Or who knows; hearing it live my just change your mind. :sofa)

A wasted what, 23 minutes, that could be filled with any 2 of so many other better songs, with room left over: As I Am, Endless Sacrifice, Home, The Root of All Evil, On The Backs of Angels, Innocence Faded, Fall Into The Light (Dat SOLO :chef), In The Name of God, Just Let Me Breathe, Trial of Tears, Lines in The Sand, Scarred, Stream of Consciousness..., just to name a few off the top of my head!

Maybe they're rotate in 2 different songs every 2 nights like they did on the previous leg, and I'll miss it. :grin

It sounds like they’re planning to play it for the US tour this fall since it’s the 30th Anniversary of its release.

For me, I would happily pay to go to a show that was just that song and the covers from the album. It’s easily my favorite song of theirs and my favorite thing they’ve ever done.

Seems like they’ve been trying to balance their shows for both fans of their new stuff and fans of their old stuff
