Digital Igloo (Eric Klein, YGG)

Line6 rebuilt Helix core and 3.2 redesign may improve the sound and give a "new youth" to the units.
2.80 was a pretty significant overhaul of Helix Core, and 3.20 is overhauling it again (requiring another double update), albeit not to the same extent. I will say, however, 3.20's headline may actually result in the biggest sonic leap Line 6 has ever made, including going from HD500X to Helix. Paul Hindmarsh sent me new clips showcasing 3.20—simply reamped from the dry versions of the clips we have online now—and the difference is eyebrow-raising.

Yeah, it's total hyperbole, and it's probably just me being excited, but y'know how when you go through presets and you're all skip, skip, skip until you find one worth tweaking? Now I just kinda get lost in Preset 01A and keep playing. On paper, 3.20 may not appear all that impressive, and we're not doing anything super novel or groundbreaking, but man, the difference is staggering to my ear.

But my ears have been shot since the Swervedriver show in Phoenix back in '98, so YMMV. Please protect your hearing, everyone.

I'm curious about what is causing this sonic leap.

I'm not curious, I'm horny actually.

I'm as happy as anxious reading this.

Hey D.I !

Thanks for the "update" :)

Have to ask ......... and this is a bit of a "running joke on me" around here - and "the other place" - :) but can you please at least tell us if "IR-only" users will also get the same big sonic leap ?

All the best either way and really looking forward to 3.2 dropping :)

Ben

Hey all !

Actually ..... I've come to a bit of a conclusion ..... given I've asked D.I this question about "will the sonic improvements also be there for IR-only users" a few times, and he hasn't responded to any of them, I'm guesstimating / concluding that the "staggering" sonic improvements he is talking about are solely about the new Cab and Mic block with no changes to the audio engine itself.

Hope I'm wrong, but I'm reading - on and between the lines - a clear trend in his comments / snippets so far, especially given how precise he is with the words / descriptions he uses.

Its all good though :)

All the best,
Ben

I think it's gotta be more than just changing the stock cabs to "better" IR-based stock cabs. If that's all it was, it'd be obvious that it'll be no improvement for the majority of people who are already using 3rd party IRs. And I think D.I. is careful enough with his words to not suggest something like that, knowing it'd be a big letdown to many.

There has to be something a little more to the sauce. Maybe a different approach to cab modeling that goes beyond just a static IR?...
