Covid rant

It‘s now been one year since my wife and I caught the plague. I recovered rather quickly and was able to work again after one week. Unfortunately, my wife has been chronically ill ever since, struggling with all kinds of persistent symptoms and nasty fatigue syndrome. She has been through a truly terrible medical odyssey and has had to drastically reduce her weekly working hours in order to remain able to work at all.

My best wishes to her!

I do by now know several folks with at least some Long Covid symptoms, possibly the most irritating (or rather horrible) thing being that they vary so much and that there's no exact way to adress them, if at all.

Can't complain too much myself, but when I got it seriously for the first time (already had it before but that went almost unnoticed apart from some typical cold symptoms) in winter 2023, I had all sort of weird things happening for the next 2-4 months, such as fatigue (or rather "brain fog"), numb fingers (and other extremities), partial loss of taste/smell, ongoing sniffles and coughing and what not. Pretty worrying. Still not as bad as for many other people.

Thank you!

The worst thing is that many (most) regular doctors simply have no idea about post Covid or even deny its existence. It was devastating to see my wife crying after many of her countless visits to different doctors because they either didn't believe her or simply had no idea how to help her. A few weeks ago, she finally had an appointment with a Europe-wide renowned specialist in Münster, for which she had to wait several months. There she was finally believed and the doctor prescribed her several off-label medications, which actually help her a little, but unfortunately also have their own side effects.

There was an article in Time magazine a couple of months ago about long COVID sufferers being referred to psych wards, because doctors were misdiagnosing symptoms as psychosomatic, and patients' frustration as hysteria. Terrible.

Found it:

Yep, happened to my wife, too. One doctor told her that it‘s just psychosomatic, another one thought she had a depressive episode, and the worst one yelled (!) at her and told her to pull herself together and do more sport (which is the worst advice ever for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome).

Where's that sonofabitch at so I can kick him square in the nuts?? Repeatedly! :horse

Really sorry to hear about your wife, TTZ. That sounds like a lot to manage. :(

All that must be awful... 😢 Sorry you folks are going through this. Best wishes to your wife, may she fully recover someday. 💪

It's a shame doctor's qualities vary so much, even more when it comes to "rare" problems and doctor/patient ethics, like actually listening/respecting.
